There's been a lot of talk recently about sin.

It seems to be the general consensus in certain circles that homosexuality is a ticket straight to hell....on a par with homicide, almost.

This got me thinking about the varying sins and their 'weightiness', so to speak. Is there such a thing as a 'scale - o - sin', where someone can measure what sin is worse than another? Isn't all sin bad, period? I mean, where in the Bible does it say that homosexuality is worse than coveting your neighbor's wife? Why do some people feel it's ok to make lewd comments about women, look at pornography, lie, and cheat - but then turn around and condemn gay people? Isn't one sin as bad as another? Is there a list that I don't know about? Something like 'Top 10 Sins (you really want to avoid these)' as opposed to 'SinsThat Are Sorta OK (everyone does these, don't sweat it)'? And whilst I'm on the subject, isn't being judgemental sinful? I seem to recall Jesus as saying 'Let those of you without sin cast the first stone' (words to that effect, anyway, my recollection of scripture is a little rusty).

I personally think that sin is sin..is sin...is sin...and so on, ad infinitum. According to the bible,I'm a sinner (yes, I read it even though I'm not Christian), and I'm no better than anyone else. Maybe more people, especially those who consider themselves to be righteous Christians, should do the same.

I agree. Sin is sin, no matter the action. Why should it matter if you "just lied" or killed someone or even "worse" (sarcasticlly said) are a homosexual, which two people i happen to very close to are. It deeply disturbs me that people are so wrapped up in their "God-gracious" world that they don't see the sins that they make themselves, but are the first to condemn someone when they are "worldly."

You know Dharma, your damn right, a sin is a sin, no matter what it is, but as for the whole homosexuality goes, Im not gay but I do have a few friends are and you know I think that they are entitled to the love that they have just as much as I do, so they love the same sex big whoop ya know, Im not gonna condemn them because they love another guy or they love another girl, then that would mean that they would have just as much right to comdemn my right to love my girlfriend and thats a bloody nose coming with that one... you get the jest of it Im sure, but you brought up a valid point and I commend you on it... good work girly rock on.

Adios.

Good for you, Muggaz!
on Apr 07, 2004
Yeah... me and Muggaz are going to be pretty toasty together, I guess.... although, to be honest... I don't believe in Hell. So, I guess I'm free to actually live my life the way I want to, without fear or regrets.

I don't believe in hell either, Nicky. I think that living your life without fear or regret is the only way to do it...and being responsible for your own actions and choices, not blaming them or the results on an unseen entity is good practice too.

Reminds me of the last stanza of 'Invictus' -

'It matters not how strait the gate
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul'

That's going to be on my memorial marker....

I agree that a sin is a sin. Homosexuality as a lifestyle is, I believe, a sin (pretty clearly biblical), but it's no worse than having a habit of looking at girls sexually, which every straight guy obviously does. So I figure we all have our issues to deal with.

Muggaz, I'm praying for you. Ditto for you, NickyG. Religion aside, it's just not a healthy way to live life.

Why isn't it a healthy way to live, Dan? What's wrong with making conscious choices and not regretting them? I don't think that Muggaz and Nicky are talking about making rash decisions, I think they're talking more about doing what they want to, living life on their terms. I personally don't see anything wrong with that.

Dan...

Who are you to tell me i can have pre-marital sexual relations with a girl i had been seeing for 2 years?

Pray for me all you want... If your time is not important to you, go right ahead and waste it. If you think my character is questionable because of this, you are not half the person i thought you were.

The same goes for Nicky and Dharma... all fantastic people...

making conscious choices and not regretting them

This is exactly what I mean. I'm not saying that every choice that I make is going to be a good one, but I'm not measuring up these choices against someone else's belief system that has a whole lot of 'rules' about living that follow you through eternity. Sorry, that's just not my way of thinking and understanding. I do my best to be a good person, but if I decide to cultivate relationships with women, or enter a relationship that involves more than just two people, there's nothing wrong with it. Not in my world. I'm not forcing my beliefs on anyone, and I'd just as soon not have anyone doing so to me.

I appreciate you wanting to pray for me, but I don't need it. Thanks, though.

Cool, Nicky, I'm glad we're on the same page (again)..that happens a lot, doesn't it?

I do my best to be a good person

I think that that's what's really important, not the gender of the person you fell in love with or the fact that you chose to express you love physically before you were married.

I liked this article... you're right, there is no "scale-o-sin" . There are just greater earthly consequences for sins. Kind of like if you have hate in your heart, and murder someone, they are both sins. But obviously one will have more consequences than the other.

Ditto, Dan... I'm praying for you Muggaz. Why are you so proud about one day burning in hell?
on Apr 07, 2004
I don't think he's proud of burning in hell one day, I think the point he was trying to make is that he's going to be proud to have lived his life with no regrets, making choices that are his own and taking responsibility for all the things that have happened to him.

Just out of curiosity, what exectly will you being praying for when you pray for him? For your god to guide him? To help him? Perhaps he doesn't want that...perhaps he's happy with who/what he is and like Nicky said doesn't want to measure his choices up against someone else's belief system that's full of rules. I'd still like to know what you're going to pray for when you pray for him though..

Muggaz, when you said, "Saint Peter" I read "Sir Peter" and got all confused. When I realized my mistake, it was hilarious. Guess you just had to be here.

Sir Peter/Saint Peter don't seem to have a whole lot in common.
