I got a lot of spam in my lunchtime emails today.

Someone has decided to be pathetically childish and sign me up for a bunch of newletters and free trials of this that and the other.

It was kind of silly for them to do that, especially from my home email address....because there are only a handful of people who have it.  Most people have my gmail or our family yahoo adresses.

They also made a mistake when they signed me up for a free trial version of something - because when I went to cancel it, I found that because I didn't have the user name and ended up having to call the company.  I explained to them that I didn't sign up for it, and asked if they could tell me the IP address and location of whoever did sign me up for it.

They can.

So, now I'm going to call and email the rest of the companies who I got spam from today and see if they can provide me with the same information.

It's going to be interesting to see where these fraudulent applications have come from (and yes, they are fraudulent).

Anyone else have an idea who could be doing this?  I think that we ought to start taking bets as to which city and state the IP address will show up as originating in....

Come on people! This is dharma's thread about her recent problems with a certian sick woman. Stop hijacking it to bicker about typing styles that annoy you.

Dharma, I am sorry to see what that sick woman or whoever it is if not her is doing. When you can come up with conclusive proof of who did this too you and it turns out to be a blogger that blogs here, maybe you could send it on to the JU admins and see if they would ban the other blogger for harassment.

I couldn't agree more....although I'm not prepared to say that it's anyone in particular until I have proof. Should I get proof, or at least evidence that would strongly suggest that one individual is responible for this whole mess, then yes, I will pass it on to admin.

It's kind of out of my hands now....I talked to SBC (my ISP provider) about it yesterday, and they're working on it. I don't know what, if anything, will come of it, but I have to try. See, not only is it junk email, but this person has ordered services and products in my name that will arrive via the USPS and which, if I don't cancel them, will cost me money. I've also got credit card applications, so I'm going to watch my credit report and see if anyone actually applied in my name or if they just enquired.

I'm hoping whoever did this actually applied for credit....because then it becomes a case of criminal fraud, not just harassment.

My apologies everyone else.

Wow, the extremes some people go to. Whoever it is really has some serious issues. Did you contact a credit union to set your credit on fraud alert?

Nope, I'm going to do that this morning. I'm also going to talk to one of the attorneys I work with and see what their advice is. I do know that I'm not just going to let this drop.

WOW and Kona.....Can you please try to keep your little battle on one thread and quit bringing it to every post that you encounter each other on?

Kona, we know that his typing irritates you.  Get over it.

WOW, we all know that Kona irritates you.  Get over it.

Your little squabble looks like a grade school game of "I know you are but what am I?" and it's completely useless and inappropriate on this thread.

Something else to consider, as I have seen this done.  Maybe your address was passed onto a list (usenet or chat) and they are doing the sign ups?  IN which case you will never know as the IPs would not be from anyone on your list.

It is the Internet equivalent to finding "For a good time, Call Wendy at 555-1212" on a bathroom stall.  The calls would not be from the author!

That's possible. Hopefully it will be resolved. Doing a credit fraud or simply signing up for stuff without asking actual owner of email address is a no-no.

I hope the person or group of people will be caught.

To Karma Girl :

Amen Sister.

And so far as I know I've only seen one person use that word in reference to another blogger. (and it wasn't Sabrina)

You aren't going to wrap me up in this bullshit. So you might just turn about and walk away. If you're going to have the xxxxxxxx sack to talk about me, you can cut the melodramatic bullshit and say my name.

Myrrander doesn't have my home email address, or my home phone number

I hope you read that, now go back and re-read it. Now read it again. Now one more time. Got it yet?

If it just affected me I wouldn't be so pissed about it. But, it's affected everybody in my house. This has gone too far now.....

Dharma, this is dreadfully awful. I hope you get it all resolve soon.

People...keep the thread on topic or go elsewhere....

If a thread attracts inappropriate language it will either be edited or removed entirely to Joe User.

Your choice.

it will either be edited

Boy, do I have problems with that.

(But to say more would be seriously off-topic. So register my protest and forget I was here.)

You may request the IP of the person that asked or subscribed you to these newsletters and other spam stuff and then try this Link to find out from which country, state, city and ISP provider this person is on,but for anything more (eg name, address and stuff) you'll have to ask local ISP providers of the certain region. This must be fun, already done it once, but didn't want to take legal action against the guy, jsut blocked his IP from e-mail lists and unsubscribed from alot of newsletters, although it was an irritating waste of time.
