..with nobody else.  Gotta love George Thorogood, huh?

Yes, I drink alone.  No, I'm not an alcoholic.  I don't drink every night and I rarely drink to excess, but that's neither here nor there.  I drink alone because I find that alcohol removes what I like to call my 'truth filter'.  I like to think of myself as a somewhat tactful person, and when I've had a few drinks that vanishes.  I'm blunt...painfully so sometimes.  So, in order to maintain friendships and relationships, I drink alone.  Occasionally I'll make an exception and have a few with really close friends....those who I've already spoken my mind to or who I know won't take offence to my lack of tact, but for the most part I don't get inebriated in public, or even with acquaintances.

The reason I blog about this now is because I'm drinking.  Tonight.  Right now, actually.  I re-read my blogs, and in my alcohol-fuzzy state was really tempted to edit and re-post them, this time with names.  I read some other people's stuff and was again tempted to leave comments, this time saying what I felt in a much less...errmm...nice way.  Luckily (for me) I'm not drunk.  I'm not lit.  I'm not even buzzed (almost, but not quite).  So, I won't do any of that.  I'll keep my 'truth filter' firmly in place and be as tactful as I can be, even if what's being said makes me madder than a wet hen.

I highly reccomend that some of you do the same.  Even if you haven't been drinking.

fantastic social lubrication.

Wow.  That's a great description....

You, reserved?  I'd never have imagined that!

Cheers, Dharma.

I drink alone alot too (sob, sob). I know people might see that as a sad and tragic thing, but I'm perfectly happy sitting at my computer, listening to my favourite music and a cold beer in hand! I usually see a lot of people at work everyday, so by evening my social quota is pretty much filled up.

(MAN, that's a lot of commas!)

By the way, what do you usually drink? Me, I mainly stick with beer. When I drink hard liquor i like Single Malts, Absinthe, AquaVita etc. Don't really like mixed drinks.

And that's what I was doing last night.  I was really content to do just that.

I usually stick with beer.  Occasionally I'll have some rum, and perhaps a little Jack...but not very often.  I find it makes me feel like crap the next day!  As far as beer goes, I prefer Rolling Rock.  I like a nice Guinness on occasion, but I really don't like dark(er) beer too much.

Absinthe...makes me gag.  I had a very nasty experience with Tequila and Sambuca one night, and now the mere smell of aniseed or to-kill-ya makes me want to hurl.

I do like cosmopolitans though.  Looks girly, but is almost straight vodka.

Icehouse beer is my toxin of choice these days.

Ooooh, oooh! A non-Irish woman who likes Guinness (even if only on occasion)? Wow, I didn't think you gals existed. Mmmmm, Guinness. I had a friend turn me on to Jim Beam and Coke. I like Beam more than Jack...it seems like it's smoother and more mellowed out. I'm generally a beer man though. I like to drink micro-brews and if I find a new one I always give it a go.

I'm toying with the idea of brewing my own.  My dad used to do it, and I always enjoyed his creations.

Yes, mmmmm Guinness.  Nothing quite like a nice chilled pint of the dark stuff.  I don't like the canned or bottled crap (although the widget in the cans went a long way to making it much more palatable), I prefer draft...and seeing as how I don't go out drinking much anymore I don't get to partake much.

Beam and coke...never tried that. Lonsome's always been a Jack drinker, so we've just always bought that.  I might have to give that a shot next time I get lit...which will be when we find out where we're going to next.  I've given up saying 'hopefully next week' because I'm not hopeful anymore...I just get let down when it doesn't happen.

whisky and coke...excpect you're meaning the stuff that comes in bottles.. Ugh! sounds like a recipe for a migraine (to me anyway)...

Um, sorry that would be whiskey, right? And strike that last comment - this a family site, mkay?

A non-Irish woman who likes Guinness

I have recently acquired a taste for Guiness and can't get enough of the stuff. I worked at an Irish bar until recently and I hated the stuff. I had lived in Ireland and been to the brewery and gave my free pints away--it was foul. Then one Sunday night when I was closing the pub, our rather intoxicated Guiness rep, Declan, came in. He wouldn't let me leave until I had a pint with him (I mean he was physically blocking the door). So, I gave in, and became addicted! It's great! I'm kicking myself for having missed out on this for so long--guess it just goes to show that your taste buds can mature! (see Dharma there's hope for Davey and peas after all!)

(Sorry that was off a bit on a tangent!)

That's ok, shades.  I too used to dislike Guinness...I don't know what happened, but it just tasted good to me all of a sudden.  It's actually good for you too..in some hospitals in the UK and Ireland they recommend you drink it as a tonic because it's full of iron and vitamins.

Corio...I think your reaction to whiskey and coke is the same as my reaction to Absinthe.  Yukky.  Funnily enough alcohol doesn't give me migraines, it's the circumstances that make me want to drink that give me the migraine.  Perhaps if I drank more often I'd get less headaches...which would mean my drinking would be for medicinal purposes...hmm, there's an idea.

Aha...How much money do you need to start research right away?
on Jun 03, 2004

None, I have what I need to start immediately.  Top-ups will be cheap, I'm a bit of a lightweight.

This could be a medical breakthrough.....ooh, I could win a Nobel Prize or something!

I'd better go get started on this important research immediately!

Congrats on becoming an "Elite" user (3)... !!!

Thanks, MJ...but I don't know that that means.  I don't know what I can do (or not do) with it....can anyone please explain it to me?  I feel really very dumb not knowing.....
