I was perusing the local hospital's 'baby pages' earlier this evening.

It never ceases to amaze me what people name their children.

Apart from the usual smatterings of ordinary names spelt 'differently' - like Mykel instead of Michael - there were a couple of names that left me asking myself 'what the hell were they thinking?'

Someone named their daughter 'Citrus'.  Yep, the trend of naming kids after fruit has gone to a whole other level.  I can hear the jokes about giving her a squeeze already.

Someone else named their son 'Corter'.  "Hey, ya got a corter ta spare for the pop machine?" was the first thing that sprang into my head.

Ok, back to the baby pages now to see what else some parents with overactive imaginations have managed to think up.....

karen--great thread...very funny.

i knew a kid in highschool named Yes (actually, you all probably know him, he was on road rules years ago)

my mom's maiden name is kane and her mom wanted to name her either "candy" or 'hurri"...she's more of a hurricane than a candy cane...but luckily my grandfather put an end to that one!"

Anon, there's nothing wrong with Dwight Estelle or Horatio.

So speak, I'm listening...

hahaha!  I'll bet that made for some confusing conversations!

I do wonder if people actually think about what their kids lives will be like when the burden them with the awful names.  It might sound cute when you're looking at a chubby, angelic infant, but what's it going to sound like when you're an adult and you're saddled with that name?

I think that LW was right on the money when she said we should all be entitled to a free name change at 18.

Hmm... I really like the sound of Patience. Reminds me of Prudence. That would be a great pair of names for twins: Patience and Prudence.

I like names like that. I might even be able to understand a name like Apple. But naming your children after a disgusting medical term should get you shot.

. We don't want the whole world named Michael and Emily but you have to stop and think about the kid having to live down or up to that name.

That reminds me...
Karen, have you heard from Michael lately?

I was in a check-out line in a Target store once and I swear I heard a woman say the following to her young girl who was running all over the place:

"Vagina! You get over here right now and settle down!"

My friends and I had to compare notes in the parking lot to confirm that that was what she said.

Sarah- No, I haven't.  I woudn't worry about it, I talk to Emily a fair bit and she says he's fine.

CS - It wouldn't surprise me!  If someone can name their child 'meconium'....

People who put a bunch of letters together and then stick accents indiscriminately on the top to make up their kids names.....that irks me.

I purchased a movie ticket from "Aphrodesia" a couple months back. She seemed pretty happy with it.

My mom wanted to name me Sarah Lee. Thankfully, the doctor talked her out of it.

I worked at a headstart daycare a couple years back...there was one family who insisted that all their kids name began with "Ja"...Jaquanda, Jamonica, Jayquan...there were more that I don't remember, and then the littlest went by "fat boy." I could never get anyone to tell me what his real name was!

Hmm... I really like the sound of Patience. Reminds me of Prudence. That would be a great pair of names for twins: Patience and Prudence.

Joseph, I hope you never have twins!

Jaquanda, Jamonica, Jayquan

That's what I'm talking about! People make up names out of thin air!

My friend's name is Joy and her sisters are Hope and Patience. I think that's a neat idea... within reason.

My mom wanted to name me Sarah Lee. Thankfully, the doctor talked her out of it.

Ha... Thanks!

I like that.

If we ever were able to have another baby, I'd want to name it Phoenix.  That's about as funky as I get with names.

Who in their right mind calls their kid Citrus or Apple?  Or Brooklyn?

Oops?

My father claims that Kimberly Clark was also in the running, but I'm not sure I believe that...
