You named your kid what?!?

I was perusing the local hospital's 'baby pages' earlier this evening.

It never ceases to amaze me what people name their children.

Apart from the usual smatterings of ordinary names spelt 'differently' - like Mykel instead of Michael - there were a couple of names that left me asking myself 'what the hell were they thinking?'

Someone named their daughter 'Citrus'. Yep, the trend of naming kids after fruit has gone to a whole other level. I can hear the jokes about giving her a squeeze already.

Someone else named their son 'Corter'. "Hey, ya got a corter ta spare for the pop machine?" was the first thing that sprang into my head.

Ok, back to the baby pages now to see what else some parents with overactive imaginations have managed to think up.....

A buddy of mine swore that he went to high school with twins named lemonjello and orangejello. With the accents on the second syllable of each word.

There seems to be an abundance of Kadence, Cadence, Kaydense...same name, different smell.

Honestly, I don't know. If I'm pulling your leg, it's without my knowledge. We were sitting around the office one day talking about strange names and my friend told me that story. I thought it was hilarious, too. He swore it was true.

I can't remember but they both started with M and were 6pounds I think both were girls - they were born in July -- found them Makinly and Micaiah (how do you pronounce that?) Parents names Joette and Eric -- Elana was pretty close to being named Joelle or Joella for a while there.

My mo mworks for a child care referall service and hears all sorts of weird names.
I can't remember the medical term, but there is a word they use to describe if the baby has a bowel movement inside you during delivery.
This mom named her kid that. She told the nurses an angel came to her and told her that name while she was pushing. THey tried to talk her out of it, telling her that she heared them say it not an angel. She refused to listen.

Poor Kid..

dharma, do you think these parents know the fate they are assigning their kids by giving them those weird names ?. i mean, you on;y have to look at the names of the australian 'big brother' contestants to know what happens to kids with "trendy" names ... aphrodite, merlin, bree, kain ... enough said.

My friend from Virginia said that there were a bunch of the PWT whose names were male and female because they thought that's what they were supposed to name them because of their hospital bracelets. They pronoune it Male - molly - female femolly. what do you think of that? I think its okay to be a little creative with naming your children. We don't want the whole world named Michael and Emily but you have to stop and think about the kid having to live down or up to that name.

I have a cousin named Luvie. She married a guy from China whose name was pronounced the same as "cutie". So they were Luvie and Cutie.........sickening! Totally true.

I have also recently heard names like Patience and Serenity. I think those and the fruit names are just a new wave of hippies that their kids will resent later on and there will be a lot of name changes in their future. I certainly wouldn't go through life being called Apple!

Our personal solution (we like slightly different names, just not way out there...as my wife's and mine are among the most common you can find and, frankly, that got annoying as well): We gave our kids all "unique" first names and more traditional middle names, so that if they don't like their first names when they grow up, they can "default" to their middle names. So far, they love their names.

Oh, and the strangest of strange names (I swear this is true): there were 4 brothers who had much to do with the history of this area; their names were: Philander, Meander, Leander, and Salamander.

Sadly, I am not making this up, and can even cite the source, although to anyone from outside the area, the reference work would be difficult to obtain.

My mother wanted to name me Parthena, and call me Par....can you IMAGINE??? Thank God my father had better sense! And then there was a girl on the teen softball team my ex coached, named Seventy Six....born in, you guessed it, 1976......@@

That's one of those urban legends that's been going around for years...so far, no one's been able to find any proof that they really exist.
