I've been following with interest the furor of reports surrounding the fate of Lynndie England, the female Army Reservist pictures absuing and torturing Iraqi POW's.

It made me wonder how this small-town girl from West Virginia came to such notoriety.  What series of unfortunate events led her to be pictured grinning like a loon, cigarette hanging from her slack-jawed mouth, pointing to the genitals of a naked, hooded man?  How did she come to have her photo taken dragging another naked Iraqi around by a leash?

I think that a general lack of common sense coupled with a lack of appropriate supervison and poor leadership all contributed to Lynndie's downfall. First of all, she isn't an MP.  She was 'attached' to the 372nd Military Police Company, but her actual training is reportedly as a personnel clerk.  She was just a warm body filling a spot. Secondly, there was an obvious lack of supervision and leadership at that facility.  The mere fact that she's pregnant by one of her superiors speaks volumes. And how did she, a female, come to be allowed into that kind of circumstance in a male facility anyway?  According to the former NCO In Charge of our local military confinement facility, while female officers are permitted to work with male inmates, common sense dictates and military procedure forbids that they put themselves in certain circumstances around male prisoners....because of the risk of both impropriety and the female officer's safety. The fact that a number of the personnel there are both pictured and implicated again, speaks volumes to the quality of the leadership. Thirdly, there was a lack of training and equipment.  SSgt Chip Frederick, another of the people charged, states that they didn't even have a copy of the Geneva Convention's rules regarding the proper treatment of prisoners.

So, we have a veritable litany of errors to fall back on...or do we?  The bottom line is this: no-one coerced Lynndie into behaving that way. No-one put a gun to her head and made her do it.  She did it, she should take responsibility for her actions.  Yes, there were somewhat extenuating circumstances...but there is no excuse for the scenarios depicted in those photgraphs. None.

Lynndie dug her own grave when she posed for those pictures.  And with Rumsfeld taking the heat for her actions, you can be sure it will be a deep, dark one.

let's face it. History repeats itself. The American army isn't that innocent. have we forgotten the seventh cavalry at Wounded knee or how Indian leaders like Sitting Bull or Geronimo and others were murdered in cold blood after they had surrendered to the Great white father?
We are dealing with the pentagon and CIA, they ain't pussies. And Rumsfeld keeps smiling. 'I am a survior,' he said.

Weree...I think that you might have missed the point of the thread.  Stick to the subject, please, or don't comment.

Thanks,

In regards to your blog, I feel that we are just scratching the surface of how the U.S. military is run. Things like this go on everyday, its just that now it's in the spotlight. I believe atrocities in Vietnam by U.S. servicemen is a clear picture that things like this have been happening, and will continue to happen; it has been going on for centuries. When people say "War is Hell", they mean it. I don't think that Lynndie England was misguided, I believe that Ms. England is a product of American culture, only in America do we root for violence, and laugh when someone gets hurt. As far as Ms. England being "Trailer Trash", it dosen't matter, she could be from Beverly Hills and have a huge Mansion. The fact of the matter is that Ms. England was stupid enough to treat other humans inhumanely, and she will pay. It just sickens me that there are others who knew what was going on and did nothing about it. I sincerely believe Ms. England has erred, but I do know her and the others are being used as scapegoats in a bigger problem, I like to call the "Influence of the United States". Shame on the American government for such idiotic handling of this embarrassing and callous incident. No wonder the whole world hates America, not only do they go into a country by force, but while there America acts more like the terrorists they are after.

Not the military I know.  Perhaps it's different for half trained, reluctant weekend warriors, but the servicemen I know are all disgusted at what she and her compadres did (and I know a LOT).  It paints a poor ass picture of them as well, and that they don't like.

Lynndie was misguided.  Lynndie was, for the first time in her life, getting some attention, and she liked it.

I have to say this...but is your head up your rear end?!  When has the US publicly beheaded any of it's captives?  When have we flown aircraft into the center of major cities and killed thousands of people in one foul swoop?  When has the US sent it's servicemembers on suicide missions with god-knows-how-many pounds of explosives strapped to their chests?

Yes, our soldiers humiliated some iraqi prisoners, and yes, what those individuals did was reprehensible; it violated the Geneva Convention's rules and LOAC rules...but to compare US forces to terrorists is just ridiculous.

In reality Miss, if my head is in my rear end then yours is nowhere to be found. The physical killings are incredibly inhumane, but I must say there are other ways to torture people. The United States is known to put sanctions on countries virtually starving innocent people to death, the United States cut off Japans oil, forcing the Japanese to attack Pearl Harbor. Gee I wonder if someone cut off our oil what would we do...Oh yeah we would go into their country and take it. We are one of the biggest terrorist organizations in the world, and for you to make those comments, shows what level of knowledge you actually have on world events. It's okay though those are your opinions, the government loves people like you...mindless soldiers doing their dirty and making excuses for them- ever think of getting into politics?

forcing the Japanese to attack Pearl Harbor.

Oh, so they had an excuse for massacreing hundreds of American Servicemen then?  Well, that makes everything ok, doesn't it.  We shouldn't have bombed Hiroshima or Nagasaki, because after all, we started it.

Are you seriously trying to tell me that Al Queida are justified in what they did?  Or that Saddam had an excuse to do what he did?

Be aware that us 'mindless soldiers' are the ones defending your rights and freedoms.  As for my being 'mindless'....I think that you're the one that's mindless, my friend.

Look what everyone is looking for is a forum to "Filibuster", hey not everyone is going to agree with you. Don't take it too personal. ****
I don't need to justify anything to anyone, I get to believe in what I want to believe because my family was in WWI, WWII and Vietnam. My family did their part, so I can talk like this. Whenever you state something you need to back it up, you my friend cannot. Please don't put words into my mouth. I'm not saying anything is alright, but GUESS what...the U.S. is getting what they deserve. Please read my Blog concerning the Abu Ghraib fiasco. I really wish the United States would take care of its domestic problems first before trying to fix the world.

You have your opinions and I have mine- Get over it!

the U.S. is getting what they deserve.

Tell that to the families of the people killed on 9/11.  Tell that to the families of those killed during this war.  Tell them their loved ones died because "the US is getting what they deserve" - oh, and that was me putting words into your mouth, just to clarify.

You have your opinions and I have mine- Get over it

Do I need to remind you that YOU were the one who came to MY blog?
