Nagin's true color? Chocolate brown.

I could hardly believe what I was hearing.

There was Ray Nagin, Mayor of New Orleans, on national televison, proudly proclaiming that when New Orleans is rebuilt, it would be a 'chocolate' city; a city with an African American majority. And why is New Orleans going to be that way? Because God wants it that way.

And I quote:"I don't care what people are saying Uptown or wherever they are. This city will be chocolate at the end of the day,"

"This city will be a majority African-American city. It's the way God wants it to be."

What would have happened if it had been a white person up there, making those kind of statements? What would the fallout be from that kind of statement? Kanye West's head would likely expolde over such comments being made by a white person. But because it's made by a black person, we're just expected to tolerate it? We're expected to be forgiving, to try and understand where he's coming from?

...and people say reverse racisim doesn't exist. Yeah, right.

Nagin's not well-suited for his job, and that's become more and more apparent.

He is NOT a good public speaker, and says pretty much anything that pops in his head. He recanted his more offensive statements on FOX news this morning.

Hehe, if New Orleans is rebuilt as a chocolate city (and he did say to add "milk", btw), he's the big nut in the middle. Sounds delicious, no?

Oy vey! But remember Karen, it is only racism if the majority is the one saying it. The minority can say anything they damn well want with no reprecussion.

What the hell does Nagin know about what God wants? Was New Orleans destroyed because God wanted it? Some loony religious rightwingers say it was God's punishment for the sinful way people were living there. So who knows what God wants?

Is Nagin only accepting black money and black...I'm sorry...chocolate labor to rebuild New Orleans?

I sat with the family enjoying dinner and the news, and watched that man use the word "chocolate" too. Why am I always surprised how much room is given to folks of color to publicly make what I believe are derogatory social almost racial remarks without consequences.

Regardless of what others think, Ray Nagin is a not a leader. In fact, it's men like him that do more harm then good on many social levels.

How can you recant something like that? It was obvious that he meant what he said....and once it's been said, it can't be un-said. He's an idiot. Truly.

Me too. I was speechless for a few seconds, I was so angry that I couldn't talk. Then I let out a big "EFF YOU!!!!" at the TV screen and immediately felt the anger rise.

He's publicly stepping away from his remarks...recanting them...although once you say something, you can't un-say it.

I agree that he's an idiot, although I find THIS less offensive than his ineptitude during Katrina that contributed to loss of life and mass chaos.

Yeah. So? It's always been like that. Heck, when I lived in the Italian section of my city and was the obvious minority lily white boy I often referred to myself as a mangecake.

It's just amazing........Can things get any worse? First hurricane katrina, and now the rebuilding the "Chocolate City"!
I agree with the majority, that it was an unappropriate remark. for the Mayor to make. You would think that the concentration and agenda would be rebuilding the city in "Unity", regardless of the overall population being 67% African Americans.

During the relief efforts, people were sending donations and opening up their homes and communities to house and relocate the hurricane evacuees. I'm sure that the continuos aid that was pouring in wasn't sent based on the evacuees ethincity, but on the basis of need. The genrosity came from all different nationalities, countries and organizations.
New Orleans is a melting pot, for all nationalities, that being said, being an Acadian/Creole from Halifax, Nova Scotia.
We have a long history with our ancestors from New Orleans.

I hope that the city of New Orleans is rebuilt with this in mind, and diversity is what makes each place unique and special in it's own way. Natural disasters have a way of bringing out the best and the worst in people, Do we always have to wait until then to do do the right thing for our neighbour?

Nagin needs to give up politics and take a more suitable job, something where the most difficult thing he has to remember is to ask "do you want fries (er, chocolate) with that?"

It's pretty obvious that he's grossly inadequate as a mayor. I think he should resign and crawl back into the hole he came out of.

I meant that he's always going on about black this and that and black the other, yet his skin, when compared to other black people, seems awfully pale. Which leads me to believe that he's of mixed ethnicity, and maybe slightly confused about his heritage. Sometimes people who are from bi-racial parents try TOO hard to identify with the black side of their culture. I'm wondering if Nagin is one of them.

But isn't this the same guy who was saying that only the Black people of the area were hurt by Hurricane Katrina? Wasn't the whole thing just a big conspiracy (complete with explosives planted on the levies that protect Black neighborhoods)? If the rich White folk of New Orleans weren't negatively affected, how could Mayor Nagin say that somehow those same White folk won't be a part of the "new" New Orleans?

He also said that the hurricanes were God's wrath for the war in Iraq (same speech). Interesting that he and Pat Robertson said the EXACT SAME THING (ie "Hurricane Katrina = God's Wrath"), yet Nagin didn't get NEAR the heat that Robertson did (maybe because he spun it to the war in Iraq?) Also interesting, if his logic holds true (it doesn't, btw) that NO was basically DESTROYED, yet DC, our CAPITOL was not hit by ANY major cataclysm. I'm thinking if I'm God, I send the message where it's going to be received.

It was Louis Farrakhan who first put forth the idea that the levees were blown up by Whitey. I never saw or heard any parroting of that theory by Ray "Chocolate" Nagin.
