Knitting. Yarn. Fiber artistry. More knitting. Nursing school. Hospice work. Death and the dying process. Phoenix Raven's. Knitting. Yarn. Oh, and Life As An Air Force Wife.

My knitting has really taken off lately.  I've had people emailing me and asking me to make them stuff, and I have...the snood has been blocked and is ready to go, and the green mobeius is getting blocked this evening and can also go out this week.

I've got a skull illusion on the go for my daughter, and a snowflake illusion one for her friend's birthday next week.  It looks like this:

I have the rest of the week to knock that one out.  In the meantime, I'm making a 'hot head' hat for the kid's pediatrician, Dr V.  This is the same hat that I made for PhoenixBoi back in '04 (it's the one on the right):

Dr V is an awesome person.  He's more than a pediatrician, he's rapidly becoming a family friend, and we are going to be royally screwed when he leaves and goes to another base.  His successor is going to have some incredibly large shoes to full.

Anyway, back to knitting.  I found out that the attorney I worked for over at the legal office is having a babay (actually, his wife's having the kids, but you get the picture).  I wanted to make them something really special; both Dave and I have a lot of time and respect for him.  So, in addition to making the obligatory beanie, I'm making them a baby blanket out of some higher-quality yarn:

You can see from the picture that it's knit with a border around the edges, but it looks like 4 different squares swen together - but there's no sewing involved; it's all knit in one piece.  Rather than make it in the traditional baby colors of pink, blue or yellow I decided to make it in a soft sage green yarn that has flecks of copper, wine and champagne in it - it's going to be a fall baby, and I wanted to reflect that with the fall colors.  I'm making them a beanie, of course, and I'm also making a pair of booties to match.

I knitted a pink newborn beanie for a fellow blogger's adorable littel girl a little over a year ago, and I'm sure she's outgrown it by now.  So, when I saw this in another knitting book I have:

..I knew exactly who I was going to make it for.  I have some incredibly soft and fuzzy pink chenille yarn that I'm going to use for it instead of the standard worsted weight yarn that it's made of in the photo.  I'ts going to look gorgeous on her....sweet little Maddie's getting herself a bunny hat!

I also have this in mind for a couple of fellow bloggers:

I don't have that exact color yarn, but I do have a couple of variagated yarns that will work for it.  I just love the wavy rib pattern on it.

My kids saw the following in my pattern book and immediately declared that they'd be the happiest kids in the world if I made these for them:

I have the beads all ready to go; all I have to do is find time to start knitting them!

After all this knitting for other people, I decided that I want to knit something for myself.  I found this on the 'net:

It's called a 'hug', and it's just the sleeves and a band across the back.  I have tons of t-shirts that I love to wear, and this will be perfect to cover up my chilly arms in cooler weather.  Besides, it's kind of a funky piece....it'll suit my personality perfectly!

Somewhere in the middle of all this knitting I'm going to have to make time for a class that I'm going to start taking on the 15th of the month.  I've decided that I need to be gainfully employed, and whilst I LOVE knitting it's simply not going to give me the kind of income I want (yet).  So, I've decided to take a medical transcription class.  If I'm lucky, I might even be able to work from home.  With the advent of the internet and more and more people having computer's in their homes, more and more hospitals are tapping into the stay-at-home mom demographic and are having their transcriptions done over the internet. If I cant work from home...well, then I'll get a full-time job in a doctor's office or a hospital (lord knows there are enough of them around here) and wait until a at-home opportunity presents itself.  As long as I'm earning and I can be somewhat independent, I'll be happy.  Besides, I'll be making money to buy more yarn with....I really am hoping to one day make a little business out of my knitting.  I was waiting on Dave in the barbershop the other day, and I took my knitting with me.  One of the ladies in there waiting with her husband has a little concession booth in front of the main store, and she came over to talk to me.  After I had showed her what I was making and a couple of the other things I had made (I was wearing a scarf and a hat that I made myself) she told me that I ought to knit up a storm all summer and then rent a booth next to her next fall.  She said she thought my work would be very popular and I wouldn't have a problem selling it.  Yeah, I know...y'all have told me that before too.  I'm simply not very confident about myself or my capabilities right now; my self esteem has been taking a beating lately and it's starting to reflect in my personality.  I'm thinking about what she said....I'm going to see how school goes, and if I find that I have time then I'll start making stuff with the aim to hire a concessions stall to sell it this fall.

I have so many projects and so little time......and I'm loving it!

This sounds awesome Dharma! People dearly love handmade knitted items!
And the class sounds like an excellent idea

I wish I lived close by, I could help you with that as I took 3 quarters of CMA training, medical terminology
is requisite.

You'd do great at anything you undertake, and you've got personality plus to help sell what someone
might not need too.......
You go girl!

I am SO freakin' impressed. Amazed, really. You are so talented!

I've been trying, but still can't knit yet. If I ever get to the states, I'm going to have to meet up with you and have you show me!

I'd LOVE to buy one of those skull wristbands for Xavier. If you ever have the time to spare to do one for me, let me know (it sounds like you are sooo busy!). I'd be glad to pay however much you want for it...it's so cool! He'd love it. He's really into wristbands.

These was a time when a handmade dopebox from MM was a prized thing.

Cool!  Can I call you if I have a question?

I'd LOVE to do that.  Knitting when you're drunk is quite difficult though....! lol

Of course I can make him one!  I don't know when, but when I make the kid's ones I'll make his at the same time.  I have glow-in-the-dark beads; I think those are going to work really well.  I also have a pattern for an all-knit one that's black with a red star on it, I'll throw one of those in for him as well.  And there's no charge.  Unless it's something huge or made with yarn that costs $20 a ball I don't charge friends (besides, it's good advertising.  Someone asks where you got in from, you tell them I made it and give them my number...you get the picture)

None of the projects that I've shown here are terribly difficult.  The only things you'd need to know how to do are knit, purl, increase and decrease.  If you can figure out how to do those 4 things, the knitting world is your oyster!

MM: I'll keep your secret, and to me, anything you make would be a prized possession.

Have you thought about taking up beading again?  It'd give you something else to occupy your time with, and I know I'd be VERY interested in buying from you.

You really are talented! Thanks again-Maddie had so many complements on that hat! You are so sweet to think of her again! I confess, I put her hat in a scrapbook page when she outgrew it because it was so stinkin' cute!

I second the admiration on your talent: You are amazing! Remind yourself of that often. If you do decide to knit professionally, I want to buy lots of baby caps as gifts!

I'm going to email you a contact about the medi-transcription. If you don't have an emploiyer lined up already, I know someone who can give you info on training for a specific company (I'm thinking of doing myself it after my kids are a bit older) I know that you wil do great at this too!

Hahahaha. At least the needles aren't too sharp!

Aww, you're gonna have to let me pay you or send you something...you've already sent me all those knitting goodies. I feel bad.

Hehe, Xavier's quite a trend-setter in his class. All his little friends will be jealous.

That's adorable! A big, bad, rough-and-tough guy making crafty stuff. So cute.

The multi colored scarf (I think it's a scarf) is the one I like the most from the pics your shared...pretty nice.

It would definitely be cool if you get that booth to sell your stuff...I know if I was a passerby, I'd be attracted to the fact that they are pretty AND home made.

Oh how cool!!!  That's awesome.  It's a treasured memory!

If you do decide to knit professionally, I want to buy lots of baby caps as gifts!

Even if I don't go into business for myself, I'm still going to knit...so there will always be baby caps available.

Awesome!  I don't have an employer lined up yet, so this will be a good opportunity to perhaps get hired....thank you!

Of course!

Thanks, Trudy.  That makes me a little less worried.

Don't feel bad....I did it because I wanted to, and I'm going to do this because I want to as well.  Gifts between friends are...well, they shouldn't be counted or numbered, you know?  They're small tokens of love and affection and sometimes gratitude, and they're given without expectation.  So, don't feel bad, just enjoy what I send you.

Hehe, Xavier's quite a trend-setter in his class. All his little friends will be jealous.

I'm glad that I can help him further his status!  If anyone asks, feel free to tell them where he got his wrist bands and give them my gmail address......I'll take all the publicity I can get!

Isn't it cute?!  I'd LOVE to have one of MM's creations.  I still think he should take up beading again; now that boho is back in fashion beaded items are almost haute coture.

The multi colored scarf (I think it's a scarf) is the one I like the most from the pics your shared...pretty nice

It's called 'rainy day' - the creator watched a raindrop make it's way down her windowpane and liked the wavy route it took...so she decided to recreate that in a scarf.  I can't find that exact color yarn, but I have some that has similar colors in it that I think will work well.  I also have some soft red variegated yarn that might work too....that patten has so many possibilities I don't know where to start!  I'd really like to get some recycled sari silk yarn to make that scarf with, but it's really expensive. The cheapest I've seen it is on eBay, and it sold for almost $40 then.....which is a bit spendy, really.

*sigh* Maybe one day I'll be able to find some of that gorgeous yarn and actually have enough allowance left to buy it.

I need to learn how to knit...that "hug" is cool.  That would be really nice to have on hand for fall when it is too cold for a T-shirt but too warm for a coat.  My Mom knows how to knit like mad...I think she needs to teach me.
on Jan 09, 2006

Well, if the Doctor really was having a baby, that would be International news!  But that is very nice of you to make something for the baby.  As well as the pediatrician!

You are a knitting fool!  Congratulations and have fun!

Wow. You've certainly got your work cut out for you...

My mom is a crazy knitter too--and I am usually the recipient of all her hardwork (no complaining here). She makes awesome beaded handbags and I convinced her to make some funky knitted handbags too. I'm going to try to add pictures for you, but I'm not great at this technology thing.

Here's a beaded handbag (one of my least favorite actually, but the only one I have a picture of):
