It's been a couple of weeks since I saw the pain management specialist, Dr Tabakian.  He started me on a new medication regime, and I'm starting to see the benefits of it.

The Duragesic patch used to make me nauseated all day, every day, and I temporarily quit using it.  He, however, thought that I'd eventually get over the nausea, and encouraged me to stick with it.  He was right.  The nausea has gone.  I'm also changing patches every 48 hours instead of 72, and that's helping a lot.

He started me on gabapentin.  It's a medication that was originally used for epilepsy and seizure disorders, but now it's used for a myraid of things - nerve pain being one of them.  I'm working my way up to a theraputic level slowly because starting with 400mgs three times a day all at once can cause some sedation...but even at 200 mgs thrice a day I can see a difference in the pain in my legs and hip.

I also had my elevail increased from 50 mgs to 100mgs, and he gave me 90 percocet a month and told me to not be afraid to use them.  For instance - if I want to go run or walk or work out, I'm supposed to take two percocet half an hour prior to the activity.  Basically, he wants me to be more active, and controlling my pain will encourage me to do that.

Things are getting better.  I have a doctor who is sympathetic to my condition and who's primary concern is my pain control.  He doesn't condem me for using narcotics to control my pain - he encourages me to use them if they help me get through the day.  And, in addition to having an awesome doctor, I'm seeing a decrease in the amount and duration of nerve pain.

It would seem that we're on to a winner with this combination, and that makes me ecstatically happy.

AMEN!

I am so glad you are getting this all straight now D. With all the pain meds out there..to be in pain seems so wrong and weird.

Now how about your heart?

Glad to see you're getting some relief.

My mom should see a pain specialist, maybe. I guess I don't know if she has or not. She's already on so many drugs. Just ONE freaking pain free day would be such a gift to her... She's begged me on more than one occasion to kill her because she hurts so much. Its no way to live. It really isn't. I'm so glad that your new regimen seems like it's working so far. I hope you continue to have positive results with it.

I am so glad you are doing better!  I know you have had rough times, and with only Dave to help you out and our meager words of encouragement.  These are truly good words from you!  And I think we all rejoice in your improvement!

Let's win it, girlfriend. You, me, Karma, Trudy, Para, Baker, ModMan, drmiller, ChaosManager, all of us here who suffer on a daily basis, let us fight the good fight and let us WIN!

Oh hell yeah.  I'm waging war on it too....by the end of 2006 I aim to be on a regimen of meds and exercise that make my pain a lot less than where it's at today...and compared to a month ago, today is better.  So, there's nothing but hope, as far as I can see.  For all of us.

Can I get an AMEN?

Amen, amen and AMEN!!

Yeah, there are WAY more medications than there are pain.....and I haven't heard anything from the cardiologist yet.

Glad to see you're getting some relief

Me too, Mason!

She's begged me on more than one occasion to kill her because she hurts so much.

Oh, I know how that is, and it sucks.  You're right, that's no way to live.

I hope you continue to have positive results with it

Me too!

Thank you, DG.  I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one celebrating!

AMEN! and DOUBLE ditto on what Dr. Guy said!

Thanks, Trudy!

Good for you! My feet have been hurting less lately too! Might be the May surgery or just that I don't have to run anymore!
