The California State Supreme Court has refused to grant Stanley 'Tookie' Williams a stay of execution.  This means that unless the Governor grants clemency or a federal appeal succeeds, Tookie will have seen his last sunrise this morning.

The NAACP claims to have found an eyewitness who will testify that Tookie didn't do the crime, and says that all they need now is 'time to investigate'. I'm not surprised.  Can you imagine the notoriety that could come from being the person who saved Tookie's life by testifying at the last minute?    Where was this witness over the past 20 plus years whilst Tookie has been stewing on death row?  Why did they not come forward sooner?

Forgive my cyncism, but it all seems a little too convienient.  All of a sudden, the day before his scheduled execution, there's an 'eyewitness'?  Sorry, I don't buy it.

I cannot testify as to Tookie's innocence or guilt.  I wasn't there, and I am not privy to all the details that the jury had when they returned their decision of guilty.  I do believe, however, that if he comitted the crimes he should be executed.  Doing good whilst incarcerated simply isn't good enough.  It's relatively easy to behave oneself whilst on death row, and besides, we're talking about the admitted founder of the Crips.  Who in their right mind is going to mess with him?

If he did the crime, he has to pay the price.  The public and the judicial system will have it's pound of flesh.

Or in Tookie's case, two hundred odd pounds of it.

Maybe it's "the Long Black Veil" all over again and he was "in the arms of his best friend's wife", and now the friend's dead from being shot on the street or an overdose or something and she can come forward. Tookie is, of course, the noble hero, so it would only make sense, right?

RIGHT?

RIGHT?

Yeah, right.

I certainly hope so.

I think that it's going to cause some problems in LA if he's executed.  I forsee scenes similar to what happened after Rodney King's trial.

I mean, he's Crip royalty.  How else are they gonna react if he's put to death?

i dunno if you're familiar with the discovery motion williams' current attorney filed in november. if you've read it, i'd be curious as to your opinion of it. if not, here's a link: Link

from what i'm able to gather, despite the length of time since his conviction, this is the first time these discovery issues were raised.

I haven't read it, no, but I'm going to go check it out now.  I'll come back and give you my opinion.  I will say this, though - if this is the first time this discovery matter has come up, then he either had incredibly incompetent counsel or the discovery is an attempt to delay.  That's without seeing it, of course.

Not an execution here, merely taking out the garbage.

May the Judgement of Jesus Christ have more mercy on him than he had on the victims his "leadership" inspired.

THIS MAN HAS ALWAYS PROCLAIMED HIS INNOCENCE (REMEMBER THE HURRICANE). BEFORE YOU CONDEMN A MAN YOU MUST STUDY HIS WORK. THIS MAN HAS HAD TIME TO GROW AND REFLECT FROM HIS PAST LIFE, CLEARLY REFLECTED IN HIS LITERATURE. HE HAS A LOT OF LIGHT TO GIVE TO THOSE WHO ARE IN THE SAME POSITION AND ENVIRONMENT THAT HE HAS COME FROM. A PERSON LIVES THROUGH THEIR WORK REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THEY ARE PHYSICALLY ALIVE OR NOT. IF HE CAN TOUCH PEOPLE AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS, WHICH HE IS DOING, THEN WHY END A LIFE THAT HAS SO MUCH MORE TO GIVE. TO MANY WANT BLOOD FOR BLOOD AND ARE VERY BLOOD THIRSTY, IT'S NOT ABOUT GIVING THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT, UNLESS IT COINCIDES WITH WHAT THEY NEED. IN REMEMBRANCE OF THE PEOPLE WHO HE WAS "CONVICTED FOR KILLING" AND ALL THOSE WHO HAVE HAD THEIR LIVES SNATCHED AWAY IN THE SAME MANNER, LET HIM CONTINUE TO REACH OUT WITH BETTER SOLUTIONS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE THE SELF FULFILLING PROPHECY THAT THEY ARE CONVICTED FROM THE WOMB. THIS MAN HAS DEDICATED HIS LIFE TO DOING WHAT IS PRODUCTIVE, TEXT 4 TOOKIE AND INTERCEPT THE ATTEMPT TO BLOW OUT HIS FLAME.

LMAO
You got to be kidding me.

As I said in the other article simular to this one, I think this is about wherether prision is about reform or just a holding cell. Is prision a place to 'learn your lesson' or just a place to exist until you get out.

And further more, death row for 20 years? where is the justice in that? You get convicted and now you wait 20 years to die? what about the victim? Just seems sad al around that it would take 20 years.

No, actually I'm serious.  Considering that you're locked in your cell for 20+ hours a day and arer monitored pretty closely, it IS relatively easy to behave yourself.

If you're going to shoot down my statements at least do me the courtesy of bringing some facts to the table, will you?  That's how debating happens, see.

This isn't the place to argue what the roles of prisons in society is.  That's a whole other article.

STRES2

Hasn't anyone told you that it's incredibly rude to 'shout' at someone?  Leaving your caps lock on is considered shouting, and I'd prefer if you didn't do that on my blog.  Do it again, and I'll delete your comments and blacklist you.

As for your stance - I really don't give a rat's behind what he did whilst incarcerated.  Fact of the matter is he was found guilty of four first-degree murders and was sentenced to die for them.  That sentence isn't going to change just because he's claiming to be reformed....which I have serious doubts about anyway.  His book that he wrote?  He dedicated that to another gang leader.  What does that say to you about his support of violence and gang activity?  Because it telle me that he might not have been quite as reformed and he claimed to be.

I don't know that I'd go that far, but I can understand why you'd say that.

Stres, nothing said in all caps is worth reading. Besides, your shouting is waking the kids!

Bingo!  That's why he/she/it is now blacklisted.  The comment he/she/it left here is the only one that I'm leaving intact; all the rest are gone.
