"To the people of Baghdad:  We come here not as conquerors but as liberators, to free you from generations of tyranny".

Those words were posted on a wall in Baghdad by a soldier.

A British soldier.

Not this year, or even last year.  Not even in the last 5 years.

Those words were written by General Stanley Maude in 1917 when the British invaded Iraq.

1917, people.  Almost 90 years ago.  Obviously, the liberation failed.  If it had been successful, we wouldn't be over there now, still trying to liberate people from generations of tyranny.

That's something to think about.

The Liberation failed because the British failed to follow through.  You are right, itis something to think about.  Especially for people Like Sheehan.

As much as i detest the reasons we went there and the fact that we're still there, I understand that we have to complete the mission and follow through.  We can't pull out now, or else we'll be back to square one 10 years from now when another Saddam has taken the reins and the Iraqi people are, once again, living under tyranny.

The do say something about history repeating...

I can't quite form an opinion on the war at all, whilst there are so many reasons to detest what's happening, there are also so many brave men and women out there and I hate to think of their cause as worthless. It's impossible to know which reports to trust at the same time, I don't know where to go for the truth, I don't know who to believe.

Thanks for the comments Dharma. You don't need to worry about me, I always manage to find my way out of the mess I make for myself somehow. But It really does help to know you care.

I hope you and your family are well. I'll need to do some reading and catch up.

History does repeat itself, Islam came close to conquering all of europe...in the 10th century.
Europeans controlled the Middle East until early into the 20th century, then allowed self-government, only after WW I...Hell, Muhammed brought about the relgio-political scheme of Islam due to the warring nature of Arabic tribes in the 7th century, the first and only time all of Arabia was united ( unless you buy into the theory that Abraham is the father of Arabia, thus connecting Jew, Christian, and Muslim )

It's all about world stability, at any given point in history................
