Trick or treat?

It's that time of year again.  Time to figure out what everyone wants to be for Halloween.

In our house, we don't do traditional store bought outfits.  We like to start with those as a base and embellish them, add some individuality.

Over the past few years we've found out that I've got some pretty good scary make-up skills.  Last year I made us all into a family of zombies, complete with skin hanging off the sides of our faces and open wounds.  We made at least one little kid cry and scared a couple of adults in the process....not bad for amateur stuff.

This year, we're not doing the zombie thing.  I'm going as a mummy (yes, I dress up for halloween.  My husband thinks I'm crazy, but I don't really care).  I can get basic muslin fabric from walmart for under a buck a yard, so I'm getting $10 worth of that, ripping it into shreds, and running it through a short wash cycle with half a jar of instant tea instead of detergent.  That'll give it a nice aged look. Then, I'm going to use green theatrical make-up mixed with a little foundation on the parts of my skin that will be exposed so that I looks dessicated and decayed.  Add a few fake cobwebs here and there and voila!  You got yourself a realistic looking mummy.  (I can also wear my back brace under all tha wrapping, so I won't look like an injured mummy!)

Shea wants to be a grim reaper.  She wants me to paint her face so that she looks almost skeletal - I think I know how to do it; it's going to involve a lot of grey color all over her face and black shading under her cheekbones and eye sockets.  She's wearing a store-bought cloak, and carrying a scithe.

Jake's choosing to be 'Jason' this year, which is going to be easy enough.  A hockey mask and a fake meat cleaver/knife.

Davey had originally wanted to be a hippy, which I was pretty stoked about. I has visions of making him look like Tommy Chong...long wig, headband, little round glasses, goatee, flares and a tie-dye T shirt.  He was going to look pretty cool!  He's changed his mind now, though.  He thinks he wants to be an alien.  I wish he'd just make up his mind....

So, that's our plans for Halloween this year.  How about you?  What are you going to be?

I'm scary enough just being myself, lol

Awww!

I've always imagined you as cat woman.  Y'know, thigh high spike heels, tight ass latex/rubber one piece bustier, cat ears on the top of your head and a little eye mask...oh yeah, and with a big ass cat o'nine tails (aka madam le chat in your house, right?!)

Wow..you do have awesome make-up skills. Those pictures look great!

I think the kids love it when they see adults dressed up. I also think adults like it when adults dress up to.

Again, excellent pictures.

I'm dressing up as Velma from Scooby Doo. For some reason my kids think I look like Velma...must be the glasses. Anywho, I have a bargin going with my General music classes that if I dress up like Velma, they better behave the rest of the year...Doubt it will work, but it's cute....

btw..nice pics!

I don't know what I'm gonna be. No big plans.

I am going to be a medieval peasant girl. My 8yr old made a vampire slayer costume with some artifical garlic, a big clunky cross, a bloody stake he made with cardboard and a marker, and a Van Helsingish hat. My little guy is yet undecided. He will be a super hero of some sort.

Haven't decided yet.

These work well for the body, but try this for the face, it's works flippin' sweet. First wrap up the hair with cheesecloth (or that muslin) Put paper towels in cold coffee and let air-dry. Stick it on with a corn syrup/flour paste tinted with brown creme makeup. Then a little black and brown around the eyes and mouth and on the bandages. Gum down the loose ends, and dust with brown powder to give it a nice ancient dusty feel. Mix red, blue and green food coloring and swish it around in your mouth (I swear it only lasts a few hours).

Do the rest with the tinted muslin, and Voila. I saw it in a Martha Stewart book, but it works great. Spooks the hell out of people.

I thought this would come close to describing LWs regular PJs. ;~D

Since we have yet to have any kids come to our door (we live in the upper of a house), and our kids are all teenagers (with plans with their friends), I don't do the dress up thing much anymore. Our big Halloween bash is Horror Movie night a few nights before Halloween. Imagine 15 people (mostly teenagers) in an upstairs apartment, 3 or 4 horror flicks, popcorn and hot chocolate. I'm not sure who is scarier, Vincent Price, the kid in the well under the floor in "The Changeling" or all those teenagers in one living room! ;~D

I've got one Power Ranger (with muscles!) and one zombie. I'm tickled about the zombie thing because it's so cheap. Halloween make up and old, torn up clothes. Can't beat it.

Adrian and I planning to be Professor Chaos and General Disarray, but I kind of expect him to chicken out. Hehe.

I love Halloween!

I've got a sweet zombie costume all set to go

Though I'm going to try the mummy ideas you and NS posted next year!

Got it now. Going as a skeleton, erm, somewhat modified from traditional though. It'll be cool......if I can find a damned bald cap. Maybe I can get a swimmers cap and use that.....

I'm putting an "H" on my forehead. I'll be a hologram of myself from Red Dwarf.

My youngest is going to be a princess this year. My son is going to be a Bionicle and my oldest, I have no idea what she wants to do. As for me....I'm not going to get dressed up...maybe I'll just buy one of those witches wig or something. I'm planning to take them to Holloween fun in my neighborhood, there's a lot of events planned for the Saturday. And on Holloween day itself, they'll go trick or treating with friends...with me tagging along!
