Henry (my weiner dog) hasn't totally got the hang of peeing outside yet.  He's much, much better than he used to be, but he still likes to lift his leg in the kitchen and the laundry room.

It pisses Dave off.  A lot.  And when Dave gets pissed off at Henry, he looks to me to carry the blame.  He told me last week that I'd better do something within a week to fix Henry's issue.

I can't house break a dog in a week.  Like I said, Henry's getting there slowly but surely, and he has entire days where he doesn't pee anywhere, but there are still days when he cocks his leg on something.

I've made him an appointment with the vet, but in the meantime I was looking for some way to keep him from peeing on stuff.

I got him some diapers.  I was going to get him proper doggy diapers, but read about a lady who simply bought medium size baby diapers and snipped a hole in the butt of them for her dog's tail.  So, I went off to the store yesterday and got Henners some diapers.

Putting one on him was a feat in itself.  He whipped around, wriggled, squirmed...it took me 10 mins to get them on him and get them fastened.

One I'd got it one him, he sat there, glaring at me.  I don't think he likes his 'fancy pants'.

But, they work!  Dave came home at lunchtime yesterday, and Henry got excited to see him and tinkled a bit in his 'fancy pants'. Success! The kids think it's a good idea, as do I.  I can get 34 diapers for $5, that's MUCH cheaper than the doggy diapers.  Dave's a little ambivalent about it, but you know what?  I don't care.  He told me to do something about it, so I did.  I'm working really hard to get Henry totally house trained, and I'm hoping that these fancy pants will help that cause along (if he makes a connection with peeing in the house and having to wear his pants, perhaps he'll be more apt to go outside)....and I won't have to go around cleaning up dog pee in the meantime.

Henry's earned himelf a new nickname - 'Mister Fancy Pants'.  I don't think he like that much either.

What??? No Pictures?

Dave took the camera to work, and I doubt that I could persuade Henry to sit still for long enough anyway (bad back day today).

As soon as I can, I will, I promise...

(bad back day today).

Fighting with Doggy diapers probably did not help.  But this I would like to see.  Thanks.

We use Hot Pants (I think, or something very much like them). We just line them with a pad and we've found that doggy pads are pretty much the same as woman pads, so we just use those because they are much cheaper.

The first thing you will want to do is get him checked for a urinary infection.  When my dogs have accidents, that is usually the case.

Also, make sure that you get some urine scent remover and use it *everywhere* that he has gone.  Dogs tend to use the same areas, and will get set off by the smell.

Make sure that you boot him outside first thing in the morning, after he eats, and about 15 minutes after you see him drink water.  Don't let him go more than 2 hours without going outside.

If you are having trouble housebreaking him, continue to praise him everytime he goes out and does the right thing.

You really need to post a picture LOL

I wanna see the pics too! LOL...

Does Henry know how lucky he is to have such an attentive Mama?

Yep, he's got an appointment with the vet next week and I'm taking a sample of his morning pee with me.

I've been using PineSol followed by a white vinegar/water combo in a spray bottle. I've seen some stuff called 'Urine Gone' on TV, have you heard anything about it?

He goes out as soon as we get up, and then again right after the kids go to school about an hour later. Then he goes out periodically throughout the day, and we leave him outside for at least 10 mins at a time. He'll go and sit by the door if he needs to go out, and we make a huge deal out of that, and out of him 'going' outside. Even Dave gets in on it - Henry LOVES praise from Dave.

I've heard that dachshunds are pretty tough to potty train....but like I said, he's getting there. He's actually having days in a row where he doesn't pee in the house, then he goes and blots his copybook by lifting his leg on the trashcan. :/ I feel like we're taking 2 steps forward and one back some days......but hey, at least we're gettin SOMEWHERE with him.

Sounds to me like he's become sexually mature and is marking his territory. Has he been neutered?

No, not yet. He's supposed to be bred at the end of the month, then we're getting him snipped.

Oh, and use pure white vinegar to remove the smell. It has something to do with ph levels.

Good advice, thanks!

That will help a lot.  Dachshunds are hounds, and they have a lot of hound traits until you calm them down.  Having him fixed will help a lot.

I use pet odor remover from the pet store because I don't like the smell of vinegar (lame, I know).  But, plain white vinegar will work.  If you have an area that he goes a lot, mix the vinegar with baking soda and really scrub it, then rinse with vinegar diluted 50/50 with water.

Or, you could get a shock collar and zap him every time that he lifts his leg in the house LOL  (I'm kidding!)
