British comedian Ronnie Barker died yesterday at the age of 76.
Ronnie, half of the comedy duo 'The Two Ronnies' (Other half was Ronnie Corbett) had retired from comedy in 1987, and had opened a small antiques shop in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. I met him a couple of times...he was always very pleasant. Reminded me of my dad...their physical features were a lot alike, as was their sense of humor.
Ronnie barker also made some comedy series: 'Porridge', where he was doing time in a British prison (co-starring Richard Beckinsdale, the late father of current starlet Kate Beckinsdale), and 'Open All Hours' in which he played a stingy yorkshire shopkeeper (David Jason of 'Only Fools and Horses' and 'A Touch Of Frost' fame played Granville the shop boy).
Ronie always managed to include something for everyone in his comedy. I remember watching him as a little girl and laughing...then years later watching again and still laughing, but for a completely different reason. There were so many layers to his craft...the obvious, and then layer after layer of insinuation and implication.
I got teary eyed this morning when I learned of his death. It feels like I've lost a family friend....and in a way, I suppose lots of people have. We invitied this man into our living rooms every week for many, many years....and he didn't disappoint us.
Thank you, Mr Barker. For making us laugh.
