When we were younger and stupider, Dave and I got ourselves into a bit of trouble with credit.  There was a point where our credit was bad.  Really, really bad.

We've worked really hard over the years to get things squared away. Yeah, we screwed up a few times with late payments, but overall we've done fairly well, always paying more than the minimum (even if it was only $5 more) and we've put a stop to opening any more charge or credit accounts.

Since Dave will retire from the military in a little under 7 years, we decided recently to start making a concerted effort to get rid of as many lines of credit as we could.  We're trying to have a nice little stash in our savings account so that when he retires we'll have a down payment for a piece of land to build our homestead on..and we're also trying to have as few bills as possible so that we don't have to worry so much about finding work.

Today, we will pay off our Sears charge account.  We've had this thing since 1995 and have been trying to get rid of it ever since.  Today, we will accomplish our goal.  Next month, the money that would have gone to paying the Sears bill will get applied to one of our credit cards - on top of the amount that we would normally pay.  That will mean that we can pay that credit card off right there and then (it has a small credit limit and isn't maxed out).  Once we've done that, we're going to apply those 2 amounts (that would have gone to pay the Sears and the credit card) to another credit card we have (again, on top of the normal amount we would have paid).  By doing this, we've figured out that we can be debt free by next summer.  The only bills we'll have will be the normal monthly household expenses - cell phones, ISP, vehicle insurance, household insurance and cable TV.  Most of the money that would have gone to pay credit and charge account bills will get stashed into a savings account..and we have a purpose for that money apart from the land down payment. (I'm going to write a separate article about that).

Paying off and closing our Sears account this afternoon is going to feel awesome.  I'm excited about it already, and I never though that would happen.  I never thought I'd see the day where I would be excited to pay a bill.

There is light at the end of our financial troubles tunnel, and it's an awesome feeling!

WTG! Congratulations! That must be an awesome feeling!

DH has been after me to start paying additional principle on our mortgage, but alas, we also have credit card debt and so it's tough to come up with extra for the mortgage when there are so many other places to apply the cash. I'm looking forward to the day when we will be experiencing your joy

That's fabulous Dharma! It's great when planning works in your favor isn't it?!

We're lucky; we don't have a mortagage or rent payments because we live in military housing. I know how hard it is to start paying off your debt, it's taken us years to get to where we are now. We just had to be careful..and a lot of times we either made do with what we had, or we went without. There was a lot of thrift store shopping for Dave and I and hand-me downs for the kids, and we had to budget pretty hard for the groceries...but nobody ever went hungry and everyone always had winter coats and shoes that fit.
It IS possible to do, and it IS a fantastic feeling to know that you've pulled yourselves back from the brink of bankruptcy (we were so broke at one point that even if we had wanted to file we couldn;t have come up with the fees to do it).

Good luck to you! (You live in Maine, right? We were looking at a Vanagon and some property in your neck of the woods last week)

Congrats on inching your way a little further towards becoming debt free

Thanks, and congrats to you too on inching you way closer to establishing your credit!

Slowly but surely we'll build the credit we need to get US a homestead within our 5 year goal...and I'm determined to do it "right" this time.

I hear that.  We're determined to do this the right way too.  It would be easy to keep these lines of credit open and use them; easy to get a loan to consolidate all of them and have more money in the paycheck...but easy aint always right, as you know.

Oh boy is it tempting to just pay the minimum $25, but I'm proud to say that I put $100 on it today, and will pay another $200 on it Weds, when i get that 'huge' check the govt pays me for just hanging around the house, all disabled and stuff.

Yay for you!  Paying over the minimum is, as you say, hard to do...I have a hard time with it when there's something that I really want to buy and know that I could do it if I just paid the minimum on the credit card.

Oh S, you must be rolling in dough with all that disability allowance you're conning the government out of.  Everyone knows that claiming disability is nothing but a 'get rich quick' scheme and that if you really wanted to you could go get a job...but why should you work when they'll pay you for acting like you're ill? (that was sarcasm for those who aren't used to it)

That's fabulous Dharma! It's great when planning works in your favor isn't it?!

Yeah, but now I'm waiting for something to go wrong...!

Actually, I'm in NH... but very close to the border. I'm at the base of Mt. Washington. Beautiful country.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm just now learning to do better with groceries. An accountant friend who did my taxes this year couldn't believe what we spent on food. His wife's got me clipping coupons for the first time in my life. LOL. I'm learning to look at it as a challenge... or a game... to see how much I can save. All change takes time, I guess... and then I'm baptist to boot. *g*

I paid off all of mine 5 years ago when I got rid of the source of the problem.  My Ex!  I had paid off all credit twice before (working 5 jobs in order to do it), and she still ran it up again!

Now I pay them off every month.  I use them alot because they are more convenient than checks or debit cards, but I make sure I pay them off in full every month.  Which means the CC companies hate me!

I only have 4 cards, one of each of the majors.  NO store cards, and no gas cards (now).

I know that feeling of joy and liberation. We have been debt free several times....and usually something sneaks in...like a new car. Sigh. but we are down to the mortgages and daily expenses and a truck payment. I hate doing bills, but I just remember how it felt when we were newlyweds and had TONS of debt. Now it's so easy to pay bills.

I wish you luck in saving the excess when you get out of debt. I usually do it for a little while and then after a few years, we are using it all again.

Congrats!

Whoohoo! Hardin and I are going through the same thing---correcting our credit mistakes from our youth. Since he is in school, he's going to apply for a loan, and with this we are going to get our cards down to zero, canceling lines of credit, just leaving student loans, so then we can maybe look for a house...

We all seem to make them.....but hopefully we learn from them and aren't doomed to repeat them.

We have been debt free several times....and usually something sneaks in...like a new car.

We were thinking about paying the one we have off and financing another one, but...this one's paid off in January and we don't need a new one.  Instead of getting a loan for another one, we're going to save the money we would have been paying to credit cards and car payments and save up to buy what we REALLY want...a VW vanagon.  This time next year we should be the proud owners of a genuoine 1970's hippe love camper bus! YAY!!

That's a good way of doing it....

Hey, if you want some help, let me know.  I'm the queen of budget grocery shopping, and I can make leftovers last for days!  I don't clip coupons very often, I find that I spend more getting the products that have the coupons on them rather than going for the generic brands of stuff.  Our food bill went down just by making a menu plan every 2 weeks....for example. one night we might have chili and rice, and then the next night we'll have hot dogs and use the leftover chili and make them into chili dogs.  Hmm...maybe I'll write a blog about food budgeting and how to stretch your grocery dollar.  LW's goos at doing stuff like that too, no doubt she'll have some good ideas!

Oh, I know the feeling! I got into credit card debt after graduating from college (all those credit card offers when you are a poor student are extremely tempting... ). There was a card debt I had since my college days that I was finally able to lower substantially a few months ago. Even that makes me happy. I was also able to pay off my college loan and pay off my car, two other things that kept me financially tied up. It's good to be free of debt..even if it's a little bit at a time. Congrats!

This may be a bit too late- but be careful about closing long standing credit lines.  Part of your credit score is based on them.  If you had a card for a long time in good standing, have the card dropped down to a low limit (to reduce open credit) and keep it open to keep your credit score up.
