I did it!  I knitted our Jake a coonskin cap!  It took me 4 hours on Saturday from start to finish, and I have to say I'm quite pleased with how it came out.  I even learned a new technique - one which will re-appear in my fall collection of hats.

And a side view:

Jake loves it; he even slept in it last night.  He's proud enough of it to wear it outside in front of his friends...those of you who have any experience with 9 year olds will know that they don't willingly wear things outside the house unless they really, really like them.

I have a different type of fun fur yarn that I'm going to try and make into another coonskin cap later this week.....this one's going to be mine!

I'm impressed! Very cool!

I'm trying to kick smoking, and I'm wondering if knitting would be a good way to replace the habit. Any advice for someone starting out?

Yes.  Get a book called 'stitch n bitch' - you can find it on Amazon for under $10.  It has really, really good instructions for total novices, and also has cool patterns for you to make things as your skills get better.  The first thing you'll learn how to make is a garter stitch scarf (garter stitch is where you knit every row)...but there are hats in there as well as wrist bands, sweaters, cell phone cosies, bikinis...all kinds of groovy stuff.

Get yourself a pair of needles, some cheap acrylic yarn, a book, and get to knitting, sistah!  Watch out though, it can be addicting.  Once you've made a one-of-a-kind piece you'll want to make another one, and another one....before you know it you'll be knitting Christmas gifts for everyone!
