I can get fixed!  I can get fixed!!!!

I'm having a anterior spinal fusion surgery done, probably the first week or so of July.  I see the general surgeon on June 30th - because they're going through my belly the general surgeon has to tag team the neuro surgeon and clear the way to my spine, so to speak.

2 titanium rods, a few screws, and some bone harvested from my hip...and he said he was 90% certain that I'd be almost good as new afterwards!

I got fitted for my brace today, I'm getting a bone density scan done tomorrow, and we're starting the process to bring my husband home at the end of the month.

Thank you for your prayers and thoughts, JU.  Thank you so much.....I'm so happy right now, so content...because I have an end to the painful journey of the past 2 years in sight.

I'm getting fixed!

I can get fixed! I can get fixed!!!!

Well, since you are not a dog or cat, I take that is a good thing?

Sorry, when I read that, it just popped into my mind.  Like the time we had our cats fixed!

But congratulations and we will wish for the best.

Ha!  yes, this is a very, very good thing.  Very good.  In fact, it's so good that I'm ecstatically happy about it...because this will be an end to my pain, DG.  And even if it's not a total end to it, it's going to be a drastic reduction in the amount of pain I have daily now.  This means I can be medication free for the first time in years.  Yes, it's going to be rough to start with, but three months of discomfort versus a lifetime of nagging pain...I think that's a fair trade, don't you?

Congrats and good luck with it. I know you've been both looking forward to it and dreading it, which is only natural. I wish you the best.

Thank you, Mason. Whilst I'm still nervous about it, I'm more happy than anything else. The fear factor went down a load of notches when he said he'd do it from the front....for some reason that seems less painful to me. When you had yours done, did you have a bone growth stimulator? I have to have one of those too....of, and what's your best advice for the whole deal? What did you find to be the most important aspect of your recovery process? Janders: Yes, it is very, very happy news!

good news indeed, now calm yourself and concentrate some healing energy on yourself you are going to need it, when does D get home?

As soon as I have an exact surgery date we can bring him home.  He'll be home a couple of days before the operation, so probably about a month.

I'm calm, and I'm focusing on being as healthy as I can be.  I'm eating properly, I'm swimming again (despite the pain) and I'm taking a multi-vitamin with iron....don't want to be anaemic going into it.

No, I didn't have any bone growth stimulator because I didn't have any grafts done. As far as the recovery, I found both with the back surgery and my current hip/pelvis injuries, getting up and moving around despite the pain helps a great deal to speed recovery and reduce the pain.

I had read that after the initial bone healing has happened you should try and 'stress' the graft...the more you stress it, the better, stronger fusion you get.

I know I don't pop in as much as I used to, but good luck.

Personally, I'm holding out for some cyborg parts. Mmmm, electronics...
