I was listening to 'Dust In The Wind' by Kansas earlier (trying to hear the chord changes and fingering patterns so I can try and play it)....and I was struck at how Buddhist-y the lyrics are.

'I close my eyes

only for a moment then the moment's gone....

...All we do

crumbles to the gound though we refuse to see.....

....dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind'

It's true.  We humans have patted ourselves on the back and congratulated ourselves at being masters of our domains...yet we cannot control the weather, or earthquakes or volcanoes, we can't find cures for diseases that ravage our bodies, kill our young  and make our elders not know even themselves.....

....we refuse to see that everything is impermanent.  Everything.  We are fragile, we are disposable, and we try to lull ourselves into thinking that we're not by subscribing to the 'bigger better faster more' culture that we've created.  Eventually though, our bodies will age and fail, our buildings will fall, our resources will be depleted....and we will be done.

We are mortal.

We're just being blown around like dust in the wind.

I like that song...very insightful. Now that you've brought up the point it reminds me of "Gone" by Switchfoot....kind of goes along the same lines:

she told him she'd rather fix her makeup
than try to fix what's going on
but the problem keeps on calling
even with the cellphone gone
she told him that she believes in living
bigger than she's living now
but her world keeps spinning backwards
and upsidedown
don't say so long in the cellphone
don't spend today away
cause today will soon be

gone, like yesterday is gone,
like history is
gone, just try and prove me wrong
and pretend like your immortal

She said he said live like no tomorrow
every day we borrow
brings us one step closer to the edge (infinity)
where your treasure, where's your hope
forget the world and lose your soul
she pretends like she pretends like she's immortal
don't say so long
you're not that far gone
this could be your big chance to makeup
today will soon be

gone, like yeterday is gone,
like history is gone,
the world keeps spinning on,
your going going gone,
like summer break is gone,
like saturday is gone
just try and prove me wrong
you pretend like your immortal your immortal

we are not infinite
we are not permanent
nothing is immediate
we're so confident
in our accomplishments
look at how dark it is

gone, like Frank Sinatra,
like Elvis and his mom,
like Al Pachino's cash nothing lasts in this life
my highschool dreams are gone
my childhood sweets are gone
life is a day that doesn't last for long

life is more than money
time was never money
time was never cash,
life is still more than girls
life is more than hundred dollar bills
and oh the town fills
life more than fame and rock and roll and thrills
all the riches of the kings
end up in wills we got information in the information age
but do we know what life is
outside of our conveinent Lexus cages

she said he said live like no tomorrow
every moment that we borrow
brings us closer to the God who's not short of cash
hey Bono i'm glad you asked
life is still worth living, life is still worth living

My God, I remember that song from my senior trip in 1979!
only for a moment then the moment's gone....

So true...

only for a moment then the moment's gone....

Dust in the wind......

The best tridium I ever went to the priest used that song.  It was so true then, and now.  One of my favorites as well.

Thanks for the memories!

This reminded me of Ash Wednesday - they put the ashes on your forhead and say that you were made from dust and to dust you shall return. A nice reminder of our mortality.

I loved when Bill and Ted paraphrased this song for Socrates.

Very insightful post, Dharma.
