I'm buying me a geeee-tarrrr!

I picked up my first guitar at the grand old age of thirty.  My friend Terryn's husband taught me the basics, and I bought myself a chord chart and strummed away happily.  I was never really very good, but I had fun with it....I had a sense of accomplishment when I learned some new chords and could play and sing along with a song.  The first thing I ever learned how to pick was the riff from CCR's 'Down on the corner'; the first song I ever strummed was 'To make you feel my love' by Garth Brooks, and the first thing I ever learned to play and sing at the same time (and be in tune doing so) was Nirvana's 'Pennyroyal Tea'.

I sold my Fender in 2003.  I had started working security, had gone back to school part time and just never had time to play anymore.  My neighbor offered me $75 for my little Fender, and I took it.

I've regretted it ever since.

Since I've been laid up with this kidney stone, I've found myself wishing time and again that I had my guitar handy.  So, this morning, I went to check out the Musician's Friend website to see what they had to offer.

I found a little Rogue acoustic for $40.  It's a junior guitar, which is perfect for me. Not a kid's guitar, but not a full size either, kind of an in between size. I had a hell of a time reaching some chords on my full-sized Fender, in fact some chords were impossible for my stubby little fingers to play..... so a smaller one should make it much easier for me.  From the reviews it's got it seems to have decent tone, and for $40...well it's worth every penny.

So, I'm getting me a redburst Rogue acoustic, a tuner, and a stand, and the week after next I should be blistered fingertip guitar playin' fool!  I'm eyeing up the chords for Sheryl Crow's 'The First Cut Is The Deepest'...I've wanted to try to play that for ages.

Thanks to Parated2k for inspiring me to start strumming again....

Glad to hear your strumming again Dharma!! Makin' music is a source!!!!

Thanks for the inspiration Kudos!! As a guitar teacher, the only thing that brings tears to my eyes quicker than being anyone's inspiration for picking, it's watching someone I taught become a better player than me. To me, that is the ultimate compliment in everything I've been called upon to teach and train others.

Pick them strings 'till the cow-louses come home!!! ;~D

Shovelheat, I'll try to resist the temptation of messing up your guessing game, but does the word "DENIED!" mean anything to you in connection to your tab?? ;~D

Shovel:  I know what it is, and I'm not even gonna go there....'Denied' it is!

Ted: I should be thanking you.  Honestly, seeing you with your loaded six string in hand made me yearn to have a guitar again.  Like I said, I'm not very good, but I really do get a kick out of being able to look at a page of seemingly nonsensical letters and lines, translate that into my finger placement on the frets, and make a noise that even my husband recognises as a tune.  I think one of the best moments I ever had was when I had got the picking down for 'Down On The Corner' and my husband looked at me and said "Hey!  You're playing Creedence!".  I had had my Fender less than a day.....it was just a very, very cool moment.

Besides, I think that it's going to be a good thing to have an instrument available to my kids.  My daughter has expressed an interest in playing, and so has my 10 year old....and if I'm playing, perhaps they'll want to play along too.

Come on, Mister Fed Ex man...bring me my guitar!!!!!!!!!!!

Dharma, I have to say after neartly 30 years of playing the guitar, I am still learning new things about it. As an instrument, the guitar is probably the most loved in the world (sure, I'm being subjective but I think most people would agree with me). I always travel with a guitar and because of this, I always meet new people. May you find as much joy in music as I have.

Incidentally, 'Down On The Corner' was one of the very first contemporary songs I taught myself too. (Prior to that, I had studied classical guitar for a number of years). The song still makes me smile...

Shovel, I thought you'd catch the joke, but maybe...NOT!!!

The joke was about the scene on Wayne's World where Wayne tried to play Stairway To Heaven on the white Strat of his dreams.

He was "denied" by a guy working at the music store, pointing a sign that said, NO STAIRWAY!

Actually, I though you were refering to that scene when you referenced the music store. lol

Glad Dharma caught it, but too bad you didn't (I guess you didn't see Wayne's World). Too bad, it would had made for a fun inside joke. ;~D

About 6 years ago when I was on break my freshman year at college, my parents got me a guitar for Christmas. I was really into it at first, but then I had to practice my french horn for a recital. I haven't picked it up since. I was thinking about picking it up again, too. I just remember it being really hard!!

Good luck and play pretty!

Congrats on the guitar, and good luck with your stone. I hope it passes soon.

Me too!  I do hope SNS gets better soon....

Ooh, you should!  Then we could commiserate on sore fingers and the difficulty of chord changes together!

I was trying to get a WW reference in there without being too blatant.....I wanted to say something about the mirthmobile or about Garth, but couldn't come up with anything.
