I don't know what I'm doing...!

I bought a ham for this weekend's Sunday lunch, but I don't know how to cook it.  I've never baked a ham before.

I know that I'm supposed to glaze it, but I'm not sure with what.  Some people have suggested cola, some brown sugar, others pineapple and one person said maple syrup.

Also, what are appropriate side dishes for ham?  I was thinking about a potato salad and some green beans.....or maybe baked potatoes and corn?

Any and all suggestions are welcomed and much appreciated.  I've emptied my blacklist, btw....so absolutely everyone is welcome to come and leave me an idea for a glaze, instructions on how to cook this hunk of pig that I've got sitting in my fridge, or suggested side dishes.

Thanks, JU!!

Can't help you, my servants deal with that sort of thing old girl.

My roommate made a ham last weekend. Our side dishes were brussel sprouts, corn and mashed potatoes.

She used toothpicks to secure pineapples and maraschino cherries to the ham, covered in in foil and baked it, periodically basting it in its own juices. It was great!

We generally have something like homemade baked beans, cole slaw and a potato salad.

Hmm..no idea how to cook it. My guess would be the use brown sugar and pineapple for double the flavor with the glaze.

As for side dishes my mom usually serves it with potatoes au gratin with green beans.
Good Luck with your soon to be roasted beast!

OK, 1st, what kind of ham do you have ?

Is it a sugar cured? Is it a country ham ( salt cured ) ?Or, is it a fresh ham?

Fresh ham is the biggest pain in the haunches, I'd reccomend slow boiling a fresh ham for about 15 minutes per pound, then trim the excess fat, and bake @ 350' for 20 min per pound.

In the boiling pot you can add some cloves and salt.

For the glaze a simple solution is orange marmalade, place the ham on aluminum foil, slather the marmalade on thick and rap up the ham. Put the ham in a fairly deep pan , baste as needed ( juices will flow ) you can also poke a few cloves in the meat as well, dressing up the look for presentation includes tooth picking the b4 mentioned pineapple and cherries ( do this at the last hour of baking )

Side dishes I would reccomend include your idea of potato salad and green beans, other suggestions would be yams ( baked w'brown sugar, pecans, rasins and topped w/ marshmellows UMMM ) deviled eggs, field peas, greens( simmered w/ the ham fat ), sliced carrots cooked in a honey/garlic/butter sauce, any corn dish...........gesh I'm hungry now........

Make sure you have lots of dinner rolls ( good ol' store bought brown and serve, brushed w/ butter before the oven ) because nothing satisfy's like the impromptu ham sandwich.

BTW, the boiling is to tenderize the meat, many do not reccomend this process, as they would prefer to bake the meat to death at 1 hr per pound. ( Makes for a damned hot kitchen too )

Bon Appetit !!!!!

I was going to offer my suggestions, but I see you have them already.  I dont like glazed hams, others do.  I think the best is to bake on 350 until the outside is crispy, but not burnt.  If you do the glaze, Pineapple and cheries with brown sugar is usually the best way (make a syrup with the brown sugar and spread liberally).  Secure pineapples and cherries with tooth picks.

And dont forget the Green Bean Casserole!

I'm making a leg of lamb butterflied with a spinach-mint stuffing. I have the recipe to cook it but don't know what would be best to serve it with. Also, if anyone has any tricks with lamb I would appreciate it since I have never cooked lamb before. I am thinking green beans almondine and rosemary roasted potato wedges.

Your ham sounds yummy Karen. My guys don't like ham so I have to get creative

Cook it slowly.....gently does it is the best approach with lamb. I'm very jealous, btw, I haven't had lamb in years. Mmmm...lamb chops and mint sauce...yummy!
