On the advice of counsel, I called the PD this morning and filed a complaint about the crap that's been happening.

An officer will be at my house later this afternoon, and will be making copies of all the emails I've recieved and all the correspondence accompanying those emails, and I will make a statement regarding the events of the past week.  The police have much more sophisticated investigative tools than I, their 'reach' is a lot longer than mine.

According to my attorney, if the police have reason to believe that one individual is responsible I can not only press criminal charges, I can also file civil suit against that individual.  The requirements for proof in a civil case are much less than they are in a criminal case...and even if the individual responsible has no money or worth I can still be awarded a judgement.

But this isn't about the money. This is about fraud, identity theft and harassment.  This is about my not tolerating this kind of behaviour.

I'm not going to tolerate it.

I really hope you catch them and punish them to the full extent. Good luck!

I second that. It's hard to fathom why people do the things they do.

I'm not going to be catching anyone. I'm going to leave that to the cops. I'm just handing over the evidence and making a statement about the events of the past few days. I'm not tracing anyone's IP address, or else I'll be accused of 'tainting' the investigation. I'll just let whoever do whatever they need to do and see what the results (if any) are.

What is this about? I must have missed out.

Personally, I think you over reacted.  But it is your life, and your choice.  I hope it does not come back to bite you in the end.

You're entitled to your opinion, after all it's not your phone that's ringing, it's not your mailbox that's full of magazines that you didn't order, and it's not your name on applications for credit and god knows what else. I don't really have much of a choice but to file a report; if I don't I'll have to pay for any services that don't get cancelled. If I can show that I made a complaint I might not be liabale for any of it (and that's from the attorney's mouth)

Ick! Sorry you're going through this Dharma. I had to close one credit card account because some of the same was happening to me with the magazines and stuff on the internet I never ordered.

Hope they get caught. Sadly these days identity theft is all to common. It's amazing where they get your details from.

I had a similar experience about 6-7 years ago. I was a member of a video/music club Suddenly I started receiving dozens of videos I'd not ordered. I had to close my account and start a new one    My best guess was I left some paperwork on my desk at work and someone got my membership no from there. I had an idea who it was, but, as usual, there was no evidence.

A small digression: We'd had quite a few instances of theft in the office too over many years - money, car keys, important documents. 5 years ago the guy I suspected was made redundant and, by a strange co-incidence, we've not had a single incident since...

I think she's under-reacting. Hopefully, it will be resolved. It must suck to have problems like that.

I agree, ID theft is getting too common. My friend got problems with that few years ago, and it was so funny that those 2 criminals basically admitted they was lying when they said that they got permit to do the credit crap via the phone, when my friend is deaf.

If it wasn't the case, police would have much harder time proving it was criminal action and not loan gone bad..

You go girl! I hope you find out who did it! Keep us posted!

Citizen dharmagrl hope you get the person, this is very childish, and uncalled for..

Hope this whole incident teaches us all never to devulge any personal info to ANYONE on the web...including surnames, unless we really feel secure with that other person.
Dharma... you in particular have to be more selective in your choices of "friends"... with friends like that, you don't need any enimies.
Please keep us posted on the investigation... and good luck!

I think you will change your opinion if something like this ever happens to you. I've had my wallet stolen back when I was in college and that caused me at least 2 years of nothing but pain. You'd be surprised how unwilling to help most governmental authorities are. Granted, this happened to me back before identity theft was as bad as it is now, but when a person that stole my wallet was able to use MY check card with MY picture on it to completely empty my bank account that ticked me off. If you think dharmagrl is over reacting, you should have been around me for the 6 to 8 months every time I checked the mail to find out which new department store I'd gotten a new credit card from... So, it would seem that the reaction depends entirely on your proximity to the event. If you disagree, let someone get hold of your wallet and we'll see how long you can play it cool.

Dharma, I feel your pain.. Hope you get it sorted out sooner rather than later!!

<Moderator Note> Technically this should be in the Blogging group. The Internet category is for talking about Internet specific thing.

That said, I agree with Dharma.
