Last week I told you about a man who had come in to our office to sort out his wife's affairs after her death and get his own will renewed.  He had been married 49 years and he was simply devastated at her leaving him, bursting into tears at my desk.  He and I went and sat in the lobby and had a chat about her and her life, and he left me with a kiss on the cheek and a thank- you.

He came back today.  Especially to see me.

He had written me a poem of sorts about angels, and had hand-drawn me some pictures of angels.  He said he felt like he wanted to do something for me for being so nice and compassionate towards him last week (me, compassionate and nice?!  Yeah, right!).

I was...surprised and touched.  No-one has ever done anything like this for me before...today it was my turn to shed tears in front of him.  He said that although he had lost the card I had given him with my contact numbers on it, he'd very much like to get another one.  Of course, I said yes, and told him again that if he ever need to just talk, or wanted to go to lunch or to dinner with me and my kids, he should let me know.

You know, this weekend was pretty shitty for me.  I felt like a totally worthless human being for most of the 3 days.  Today, though...it was as if the universe was sending me a message telling me that those who know me, who've interacted with me...well, those people think I'm alright, and that's all that should matter to me.

Those pictures are going in my memory book.  I asked him if I could re-print his prose here, and he was delighted that more people than I would get to see it.  He said for me to tell y'all, the people who read it, that they should "pay it forward", and if you know of anyone who you think would benfit from reading it to please pass it on to them.

'The Angel'

Composed by E.L (name omitted for confidentiality reasons) with guidance from my Lord and Saviour.

'We must not forget who the angels are and what they were created for by God.

They were created to give us hope and guide us across the many trials of life we encounter.

To give us comfort when all sems lost.

To give us strength when we are weary.

To give us courage and to ease the bumpy roads we may encounter throughout life's highways.

Angels are a gift from God, to guide and direct us throught our every endeavour and to spread love thoughout to all mankind.

BUT MOST OF ALL: they were created to show God's lve and to be messengers from Gid to show us the way to happiness and contentment.

Let us not forget the very importance of our Guardians and give God praise for their ever presences in our life.'

Thank you, Mr L.

Dealing with people can make a job pretty tough to deal with but little things like this can help keep you going for the long haul.

the universe always has a way of helping us when we start to doubt ourselves...I'm glad that you could be each other's angels in your times of need.

Damn straight. And sometimes only (relative) strangers can point out an obvious truth or give us the sort of encouragement we need to continue.

Lovely poem, by the way.

Really nice poem. I'm reading this a book about Angels right now too. It's really interesting to see the stories and experiences out there. Nice poem indeed.

That's the truth....it hasn't failed me yet.

I could be a smart-arse and say because I'm always right...

Honest appraisal, criticism, home-truths; these are all easier to hear from someone you don't know rather than someone you do. Well, according to my experience, anyway.
