I got my first tatto when I was 24.  It's the only one I don't have a picture of, and it's very boring...just some flowers on my left ankle.

I waited until I was 30 to get the next one.  I had decided on this design years ago, it was simply a question of finding the right artist.  I got lucky and stumbled across Matt Thrash...I told him what I wanted, he hand drew it, and away we went:

It's an ouroboros, an ancient infinity symbol.  It represents (to me) the cyclic nature of life and death.

After I got the ouroboros, I decided that every tatto I had done would be an outward representation of inner feelings and beliefs.  3 years later, I got this one:

It's a trinity knot, again representative of the cyclic, neverending nature of life.

Then, on my birthday last year, I got this one:

I wanted something with a little color in it, and also wanted to incorporate my appreciation of nature...so thought that a modified sunburst would be an appropriate way to do both.

My latest one was in March this year:

Again, another infinity symbol.  D'ya see a common theme here?! LOL

I'm getting some more done next year.  I want hebrew symbols for 'courage' and 'wisdom' on the tops of my feet....but I have yet to find anyone who 1) speaks and writes Hebrew and 2) is trustworthy enough to be honest about what they're giving me....I'm afraid I'm going to end up with 'idiot' or 'loser' tattooed on me for the rest of my life!

It's your body, have a blast decorating it
and if you do get idiot or loser on you, were better then you feet? once you found out that's what it really means you can always tell people you are stomping out your stupidity and loserness

I dig 'um dharma. I can feel your sense of yourself coming out through the symbolism.

I am reminded of the story (don't know where I heard it) of a young guy who got tattood with Chinese character he thought meant something cool but actually said something like 'loser' or 'dick' or something. I remember reading about it because he was trying to sue the tattoo artist. I laughed out loud.

I have a number of tats as well and am planning on more. Problem is the ones I want are big and tattoo prices (at least in Australia) are pretty expensive. My favourite is one I designed myself of a lizard, inspired by aboriginal designs. Even after 12 years, I still love it...

Yeah, but it would ruin the symbolism for me.  That's why I haven't got them done yet....and why I won't until I can find someone who will verify that they say what I want them to say.

I wouldn't have it any other way, Tex.  I dig your idea about the dog tags, btw.

Cool!  I had hoped that would be the case!

Yes, it is!  Once you've got one, you will always want more....I know I said I would stop after 2, and here I am now with 5 and plans for 2 more.....

I knew a guy who had letters tattooed between the first and second knuckle of each finger. on his RIGHT hand he had: first finger: L, middle finger: T, ring finger: F, little finger: C

On his LEFT hand he had: first finger E, middle finger S, ring finger U, little finger K

he would interlock his fingers to say...

I'd like to have one, but i'm scared of the pain and what it would look like later

The pain isn't that bad, and lasts for a relatively short period of time.  The ones on my upper back and arms felt like I had a sunburn that someone was rubbing or touching.  The only one that I would describe as painful was the one on my lower back, and that only lasted 45 mins - and it wasn't excruciating.

Wow Dharma I didnt know you were into being inked! Kewl stuff!!

I thought that I had sent you some pics of these before....oh well.  Yes, I am, and yes, I want more!  I've always wondered what a full back piece would look like...or some wings going across my shoulder blades....

The ouroboros would be cool to have.

I thought about and researched that piece for years before I actually had it done.  It's still my favorite tattoo.

Me too!!

I have 14 (and will be getting more) and all of them are in some way indicators of where I then was. I got the first to celebrate my divorce from my first wife, for instance. The last was a large Celtic sunface on my lower back (took three hours to complete) with, in Gothic lettering, the words 'The Prince', underneath.

The evolution from newly-divorced geek to Prince of Sadists is chronicled in ink...
