Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld has called the 2005 installation closure list 'the mother of all closures'.  Roughly 100 bases, posts and stations are slated to close, saving the government up to $6.5 billion.

You can check out what the projected list looks like here:

The base we just moved from is on there.  Ellsworth needed to close years ago.  It's a tiny base, it has a limited function...the planes that are stationed there could easily be incorporated into a larger base, as could the personnel.  Now that the Minuteman Missles are no longer there, Ellsworth has become mostly redundant.

I found it interesting to see that 4 of the 6 bases we applied to move to are on the list too.....!

I can't believe Fort Sam is on the list. That's crazy. It makes sense for Ft. Shafter to be on there, though. Thanks for sharing this, dharma.

I see that Goodfellow AFB is on the list. It's a very small base that trains people in my line of work and firefighters (at least it used to, don't know about now). When I went there as a student, we were told that it held the distinction of being one of two Air Force Bases without a golf course! That for no other reason shows exactly how important it is to the USAF...

I can't believe that Nellis is on there!  That's a decent sized base.....

Ya know, ol' Rummy reckons the military is running at about 25% surplus. At first I was wondering where the hell that surplus was, but then I got to thinking about it (I'm kinda slow like that sometimes !)   and I can see the logic there...more bases means more personnel spread out, keeping unneccessary facilities going.  Get rid of the facilities, and not the personnel, and you have more people.

It is less on the list than the article linked would like it to be. The PDF doc is a bit more informative. The article linked in that private website's list of stuff they want to see closed. Not Rummy's. Makes and interesting read though. Rummy has alwya sbeen more about overseas closures.

Strange article at the link, do we really need to redploy our combat troops to the border to defend against mexico? And if so, (not likely) wouldn't it be silly to shut down the posts in texas like sam houston and goodfellow afb as it recommends?
