Henry's first couple of nights at home have gone...well, noisily.  He's being crate trained, and he's howled and cried intermittently most of the night.  It doesn't bother me too much, I know that he's not hungry, thirsty, or cold and that he doesn't need to go to the bathroom - that he's just lonely and crying for attention.  The kids however...Jake was almost in tears last night.  "it hurts me to hear him cry, mom" he said.  I haven't given in , and Henry eventually stopped.  Dave let him out when he came home from work at 4am, and he cried for about half an hour when he got put back in so Dave could come to bed....but again, he stopped, so I think he's learning.

He has a flea.  Actually, he probably has fleas, but I've only seen one crawling on him.  I'm going to bathe him tonight to try and stope the cycle, but I'm calling the vet this afternoon to see if the have any suggestions for medications I can use on him.  Most of the OTC ones can't be used on pups under 12 weeks old, but I believe that Sentinel can be used on puppies 4 weeks and older.  Lickily most of our house has tile and hard floor, giving the fleas a more hostile environment in which to breed...but I'm still going to go around and vacum all the soft furnishings and rugs today, just in case.

You can get Advantage or Frontline for puppies I believe. I know they make a Revolution that can be used on kittens, so they probably have a puppy version as well. He sounds sweet, though. I'm a pet fanatic, 2 dogs and 8 cats -- miraculously they all get a long (most of the time). Good luck with the training!

It sounds like he is getting used to things, so that is good. It is hard to hear them fussing and know you just need to leave them there, let them learn. Hope things go well Dharma.

No fleas, man, they suck. I mean really suck. I know. I had fleas for two stinking years. Best of luck with those!

Does he have a wind up alarm clock in the cage with him?? For the beat, (like mom's heart?).

Hey Dharma..
I used to also put a heatpack in the box for the puppies. They like the warmth. Frontline does have a puppies formula. And dont give in to the crying or he will know your giving in and that will be it for life stick to your guns.

Some pups also like to have something (like a sock or sweater) that you have worn recently. The smell of you right there with them helps them sleep as well as the clock (which works too).

With our pups we put in a puppy sized stuff animal in the crate so they had somthing to snuggle up against that was a similar size to them, so it would be similar to sleeping with a litter mate.

We've done this with ours. When I went to Korea, I left behind a couple t-shirts that I had worn recently to put in the kennels. We did the same thing when we flew from Hawaii to Ohio.

I have a very large dog back in Minnesota...(I miss my Chase!!!!!!!!!), and Frontline has always worked well for her. She hasn't had problems with fleas ever, but we live out in the boonies and she always gets so many woodticks, but Frontline has been a Godsend!

Thanks for the advice all......he has my shirt in there and a bear that's about the same size as him, and I took The Geez's advice and out an alarm clock in - but he still howled half the night last night.  Still, I suppose that's better than howling most of the night like he did the first 2 nights!  Apparently he is learning, and hopefully by Saturday he'll have stopped altogether!

I gave him a bath with puppy shampoo and combed him with a flea comb and I didn't see any more fleas....but I'm still taking him to the vet this week to get him some puppy flea treatment.  I'd hate to get a flea infestation in the house.....

If you can do sentinel, I would recommend it.  I'm not sure if they have a puppy formula or not.  But, since we have had our dogs on it, we haven't had any fleas, and they are also protected against heartworm.

Dachshunds howl.  You'll have to get used to that.  Mine howl when I leave, even though there are 4 dogs all together.  With howling at night, that will stop once he is really crate trained.  You need to let him learn to deal with being along in the crate or he'll never get used to it.  Just think of it as letting a baby cry a bit to get used to sleeping in a crib by themselves.
