Yes, I did....I made a pie.

This is newsworthy because, as anyone who knows me can tell you, I have horrible pastry making skills.  My pasty has always resembled concrete, and hasn't tasted much better.  No-one would eat it - and I don't blame them.

I bought an Amish recipe book when we were in Indiana recently, and decided I'd have another go at pastry making using a recipe I found in it for pie dough.

It worked!!!  I made a blackberry pie today that has a pastry crust like my mother makes.  Crumbly, flaky...wonderful.  The secret is ice water and chilling the dough before you use it.

A whole new world has opened up to me now....a world filled with pies and turnovers and pastry delicacies of all shapes and sizes and flavors.  As a matter of fact, I have a quiche in the oven right now...with a pastry crust made by my own fair hand.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Congratulations Dharma! Pie is one of my favorites, but we don't make it that often. My wife is also a big quiche fan so she makes that on occassion. I tell you though, nothing better than a good banana cream pie!

The quiche is...delicious.  I made the common-or-garden variety, but I think I want to give a spinach and tomato one a shot next week.

The blackberry pie is almost gone already!  I think I'm going to make a apple one next...and after that I'm going to branch out into savory pies.  Steak and onion was one of Dave's favorites when we lived in England, perhaps I'll tempt him with one of those.

Yay for pastry!

What a shame to waste such a fine crust on a vegetable filling. Fruit and berry pies, baby, and nothing else!

This is weird. I had my daughter made pie for me last night (I was craving some) because she's the baker in the family - a learning one no doubt. But I was thinking that I need to learn how to make pies - cause I really love to eat them. I like to cook but I don't bake. However with the weekend hurricane situation (before the power went out) I ended up watching a lot of the cooking channel and all they featured were pies. So I had the craving for some and went into the supermarket yesterday and grabbed a couple of cans and some crust etc. It wasn't like the ones on television but it was still delicious. You sound like you found the secret to making them and I'm jealous. That's really great though. Yum!

If you want a good spinach quiche recipe, let me know and I'll look it up.  It is made with a single pie shell, and tastes like spinach pie.  hhhmmmmmm.....that makes me hungry....

Congrats Karen!  My family's favorite is a family recipe for chocolate pie and I only make it during the holidays.  It is like liquid fudge in a crust!  It is a diabetic coma in a pastry shell   My family has a very high tolerance for rich desserts but this one isn't for the weak tastebud.

All of your confections sound wonderful.  Growing boys need lots of calories, am I right?!  I don't know about your guys but my 7yr old just recently started eating like he has a hollow leg.  Chicken pot pie is one of my old favorites.  Yum!
