I'm in the process of transforming my yard.

The previous resident had planted chrysanthemums, lobelia, pansies, ornamental grasses and a couple of shrubs and had neglected to do anything else with them.  The first weekend we were here I tried to corral them a little, but it just wasn't working...besides, I'm allergic to 'mums.  So, they all got pulled up this past weekend and I'm starting all over.

Someone in the past also put gravel down in the beds...in an attempt to inhibit weed growth, I suppose...and then threw down a ton of bark on top of that.  Neither idea worked, and I had a ton of weeds growing through the gravel and bark combo.  So, I had to rake as much of that up as I could, pluck out the weeds, and till the soil in preparation for my gardening ideas.

The bed in front of the kitchen window is going to be my rose garden.  It's quite deep, about 3', so I'll have plenty of room for other stuff.  Next spring I'm going to tack a couple of piece of trellis either side of the window, and then I'm planting rose bushes there and training them to grow up the trellis.  I planted daffodil and crocus bulbs towards the front of that bed this past weekend, so come March or so I should have a nice splash of color in the front there.  I'm reserving part of that bed for herbs...I grew oregano, basil, dill, thyme, and sage quite successfully in pots last year, so next year I want to give them a shot again, but this time in a proper bed.

Now all I have to do is figure out what I want to do with the bed under Davey and Shea's bedroom windows and the bed under the tree in the front yard.  I think I'm going to put tulips, narcissi and crocuses under the tree, but the bedroom window bed....I really have no idea what to do under there.

Anyone got any suggestions?  It's in the shade for most of the day, it catches some sun in the late afternoon and early evening.

My favorite flowers are delphinums and coral bells, so that's what I planted in one of the beds in my backyard. Delphiniums and coral bells do really well in partial shade, depending on what kind you get, and they're gorgeous. If you get the red coral bells, you might see some hummingbirds come visit your flowers. Since they're also perennials, you don't have to replant them every year and they don't need a lot of maintenance. Delphiniums do need something to grow up through, though, or they'll get too top heavy and break. There are lots of different varieties of delphiniums, they grow very quickly, and they will bloom twice a summer if you cut them back after their first bloom is done. The coral bells also get nice and leafy.

Ooh, delphiniums!  I hadn't thought of those (obviously!).  Yep, I think that those are going to be part of it.  I was thinking about impatiens as well (or as we Brits call them 'busy lizzies').

Maybe I'll put a couple of roses there are well.....

Plant beer cans so you can have 6-pack bushes next football season!.
Will lillies work that far south? Marigolds to keep the zombie deer away from your herbs.

Yep, day lilies will work okay....and marigolds are a must to keep not only zombie deer but poo flinging squirrels away!

Impatiens are always good for semi shady areas, ('specially New Guniea impatiens,) you might try mixing them in with some shade area bulbs like tuberous begonias, or if there's enough sun, some irises, so that you could have something a little brighter during one season, and color remaining in another.

Caladiums also have some very nice color when it's shady enough, otherwise they're just plain jane green. Lobelia??? Nasturtium might grow well if it's hot enough in the summers and enough light. No no, canna lillies, oodles and oodles of canna lillies. Damn, I've got to stop before I get carried away. Sigh......I miss my gardens......

SNS, I'm very impressed with your horticultural knowledge!

I think that the plan is this....in kitchen bed I'm putting roses, herbs, marigolds, and in the spring I'll have daffs and crocus.

Underneath the bedroom window I'm putting delphiniums (at one end), and then impatiens, cana lilies, and perhaps some irises.  I think I'm going to out some daffs and tulips under there as well.

Underneath the tree I'm putting narcissi, tulips and crocuses...and maybe some annuals, though I'm not sure about that yet.

I do want to get some fuschia's and hang on the porch and carport.  I love those plants....

No, Geeze, I'm not the mistress of anything, let alone smilies.....I will come and visit you tho!

I plantes tulips and crocuses under my tree this afternoon.  I added a few tulips to the front of the kitchen bed and put a few in the bedroom window bed.  Come spring, I should have a really colorful yard!

Go more for the green goddess lillies

Ok...I'll see what I can do.  I saw roses on sale today, so I might get a couple of those and plant them this weekend.  Apparently it's okay to plant in the fall.....

I'll send pictures this weekend.  It'll be cool to see 'before' and 'after' shots....I'll send you some of Henry this weekend as well!
