Jake lost his upper front tooth today.  He lost a lower one last week, so now he looks like a pro hockey player when he smiles. He's pretty proud of his gap..and school pictures are coming up at the end of the month, so we'll have a permanent record of how he looked when he lost his teeth.  I'm a bit sad about it - he's my little guy, the baby of the family, but he's growing.  He's the last kid I'll get to see lose his teeth ... it's just kind of poignant.

In other news from our house, Davey got transferred to the 'Talented and Gifted' class at his school.  His teacher called me last week with his test scores (he's reading at beyond a HS level, among other things) and she said that she's spoken with the Principal and they both strongly recommended that Davey be moved into the TaG class for all his subjects, starting as soon as possible.  I was a little taken aback....I knew he was smarter than the average bear, but his test results, and what she said about his consistent class work..well, I was surprised.  So, he started this Monday, and is loving it.  Comes home from school enthusiastic about homework and full of stories about what they did in class that day.  I'm pleased, I'm very pleased....and I'm starting to wonder if some of the behavioural problems he had last year weren't because he was frustrated at school.  Time will tell, I guess.

Finally, Dave found out that he's in all likelihood getting deployed to Iraq next spring (if not before).  Wonderful.  I just get him back, and they're already talking about when he's going to have to go off again.  Ah well, such is the lot of a Air Force wife.

Congrats on your little guys milestones. You and Dave must be feeling awful proud!

I'm sorry to hear that Dave may have to leave so soon. I hope it ends up not being the case, but if it is you know I am always here for you.

My mom has one of those pics of me from way back in the day. They are so great!

That's awesome! Any kid being happy about school is a good thing, but it's especially great when it's something like a TaG program!

Wow, I don't know what to say. I'm sorry to hear that he may be deploying so soon after returning home.

Well, we knew that the cop squadron from here deploys a lot, so it wasn't really any surprise.  AF regs say they can't touch him for 6 months after he gets back...and being as 2 teams deployed the week he got here it looks like he'll be on the team that replaces them.  However, should war break out, the 6 month-no-touch deal is out the window.  With war, all bets are off, as you know.

I'm sorry to hear that Dave may have to leave so soon. I hope it ends up not being the case, but if it is you know I am always here for you.

Aww..I got a bit teary over that!  Thank you, thank you so much......

Yes, we're very proud of him...of all of them.  They've all made the transition to a new school and new neighborhood very well, better than we expected.  Shea came home today with a flyer for cheerleading camp in her hand - I asked her if she wanted to go, and she looked at me like my hair was on fire.  She said if there was a soccer camp, then she'd think about it...but cheering?  She didn't think so.

That's my girl.  That's all I can say about that.

It sounds like there are fitting in well in their new school and such. Good for them, that had to be a hard adjustment and they seem to be doing really well with it!

My 7yr old has the gappy thing going on too.  He lost both upper front teeth just before school started, has two big lower ones in now and has holes on either side of them with big teeth edging their way in.  My husband thinks it looks goofy but I think it is cute as can be.  He says that is just the effect of my "mommy goggles".

I hadn't heard of the TaG program until recently.  A teacher and neighbor each commented that they thought my 7yr old would get nominated.  Here you have to pay privately for your child to be in the TaG program, at least that is what I have been told.  Do you have fees for your program?  My guy is in 2nd grade and is reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkapan (sp?).  I didn't think anything of it since he has been a really good reader for quite some time.  He taught himself when he was about 3.5 yrs old.  People seem to think this is quite extrordinary.  I try not to be one of those "my child is so gifted" parents.  I don't want them to get a big head (they don't need any help in that dept ).

Davey is bound to be a genius with a mum like you though

My heart aches for you over the thought of Dave being deployed.  It is so easy for people to have the "well, that is what they signed on for" attitude when they don't know the personal stories involved.

Very best wishes to you and your family!

I have the same goggles, I think...I think it looks adorable, and Dave says he looks like a Jack-o-lantern!

The TaG program here is free...and I'm the same way about big-headedness.  One of Davey's friends told him he was in the 'smart' class now, so Dave and I had to put a stop to that train of thought.  We told him that it's just a class that teaches things in a slightly different way...and really, that's what it is.  There's a lot more independent learning going on, with the kids being encouraged to free-think their way around topics and diversify if they want to/can.  I like it.

I dunno about his being a genuis due to my genes...Dave's the smartest one in this house.  Well, he's smarter at different stuff than me, put it that way.  When it comes to right-brain stuff, he's the king.  left-brain things are my domain..between the boith of us I think we'd make a pretty well-rounded whole person!

I'm a little let down that he's projected to deploy aready as well.  Im more worried about where he's going...whilst i (for obvious reasons) cannot give exact locations, I can say that it's too damn close to the action.
