My kids went target shooting with our friends down the street yesterday, and then camped out in their backyard last night - leaving me at a loose end for the afternoon and evening.
So, I went and bought 'Slaughterhouse 5'. I've read parts of it before, but not the book in it's entirety. I had settled down at homes yesterday afternoon to read it when the phone rang. My friend Shanna had locked her keys in her car and wanted me to take Dave's Slim Jims and get it open for her.
So, off I went to try and break into her Montero. I've never Jimmed my way into a Mitsubishi before...and after 30 mins of fighting (I could feel the lock, I just couldn't hook it well enough to pop the latch) and one cut finger (Slim Jims are sharp) I called in reinforcements. They couldn't get it open either, so Shanna ended up calling a locksmith....and it took him 40 mins to get into the damn thing, which made me feel much better about my Jimming skills. After seeing what he charged, I'm seriously considering taking a locksmithing class when we've got settled in at our new base. $90 for an hour's work. I can't make that much PI'ing!
After I had got my tools put away I went to my friends house to help pitch the tents for the kids. We sat outside, had a few beers, and watched a spectaular lightning storm pass by...tons of ground hits, very pretty. The kids were adamant that they were going to sleep outside in the tents, regardless of the weather...so after kissing them all goodnight I came home, read some more Vonnegut and fell asleep in an extremely quiet and empty-feeling house. I didn't sleep very well - mainly because the kids weren't there, I think.
So, that's how I spent my Saturday...boring, I know, but hey, I'm an Air Force wife.
