I have a question, and I'm probably going to sound really dumb here...

...how do I check out someone's IP address?  Can I even do that?

I'm doing a background check and having this info would be really helpful to me.

Thanks!

im not sure if youre asking how to resolve dns (domain name system) numbers--like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx-- to identify the provider or how to obtain a specific user's numbers.   to resolve an ip#, go to network solutions site and click on the whosis tab, enter the number in the search field and select 'ip number".

to obtain a number, youll probably have to be in direct contact with the other system via a messenger connection or something similar (and then use the dos command netstat)... or in receipt of email routed thru the user's mail server(the server numbers will be shown in full header mode).

Kingbee, I have no clue how to do any of what you told me to do.

Told you I was going to sound dumb....

I have a theory, that ties in with my 'BS-ometer' blog.  The background checks I've managed to do so far haven't turned up anything, which re-enforces my theory.  The IP address will just be the icing on the cake, so to speak.

Techie here...

There is no real way to call up something that tracks the IP addys of people that contact you. If you were a computer person, you could use some tools that come standard with Windows NT 4.0, or use a small program called a packet sniffer. What it does, is it analyses the incoming information packets to your computer and, in some cases, resolves the IP address in the Headers of the packet. Unfortunately, we are in the world of firewalls and routers, so the address you might get would be from that, instead of the address given to the internet is not the "true' address of the sender, but can get you closer by contacting a ISP with the IP you get.

hi,

if u wanna know the ip address of a person then either u can use ipgrabber or just go to command prompt and type netstat -a to view all the available connections and opened ports from ur computer.type netstat/? to know more.

Something that many "commentable" sites do is log IPs to stop this sort of thing.

Generally only viewable to admins/site-owners, but it means it's very simple to catch the sort of shennanigans that have gone on around here lately.

Something like this: http://www.osnews.com/comment.php?news_id=7812

This is nice
