I'm running around like a headless chicken.

We have opted not to fork out $200 to have someone clean our house to inspection standards for us.  I'm doing it.  I started this past weekend with the ideal that if I get most of it done now, it should ony be a matter of a touch-up here and there after all the furniture is gone for us to pass. The military inspections to leave military housing aren't that bad, but they're not easy either.  They're picky about appliances and bathrooms, but they don't require that you clean windows.  It varies from inspector to inspector, we have found, some being easier than others.  We're hoping for one that understands that I've been alone and injured for the better part of a year.....and is thus a little sympathetic.  That being said, we'll probably get an inspection Nazi who'll fail us for miuntiae.

So, today I removed everything in the kid's bathroom and cleaned it....then shut to door on it.  No-one's allowed in there, we're all going to have to use the half-bath upstairs on the en-suite in my bedroom.

I also removed all the decoration from the walls and spackled the nail holes.  I have piles of 'stuff', things, in my dining room, all topped off with a little note designating from which room they came.  Hopefully the packer and movers will appreciate my work now and everything will go a little smoother (and faster).

I also wiped out all my cabinets and drawers in the kitchens and bathrooms.  I didn't realize how many 'junk drawers' I had accumulated...I stuff things in drawers, think "I'll use that later"...and I never do.  So I trashed most of it.

Tomorrow...the kid's rooms.  I have most of their stuff packed already.  What's left is going to get stacked on their beds with another little note on the top, designating which kids it belongs to.  The boys like to sleep upstairs on the hide-a-bed in the summer anyway, so their room can also get cleaned to inspection standard and the door can be shut.  Shea..well, her stuff can go under the bed or in the dining room.

I really don't know why I'm doing all this now.  I still have 3 1/2 weeks until Dave comes home.  I guess I just feel that I have to take the pressure off of him and not leave a bunch of stuff needing to be done when he gets back.  I want the first couple of days together to be as hassle and stress-free as possible....after all, getting re-acquainted again is hard enough.

So, I have a plan, and as much as possible, I'm sticking to it.  I'll probably have cleaned my fingers raw by this time next week and be suffering toxic effects of ammonia inhalation...but as long as we pass inspection and get out of here on time it'll have been worth it.

Oh, and in case anyone was wondering - 25 days.

I feel for you. The real estate nazi put me through hell to get my deposit back. All the neighbors agreed the place looked far better when I left than when I arrived and that she was just harrassing me. I had to keep going back to the place for two full weeks after I'd officially moved.

What happens if it doesn't meet their requirements?

I'll be sending positive vibes your way.

If we don't pass the final inspection 1st time around, we re-schedule for the following Monday (it's on Friday), clean all weekend and pass Monday.

The thing that bothers me is the carpet.  It's horrible  It's stained and the second time I shampooed it, bald patches appeared.  It wasn't new when we moved in (we've been in this house 3 years) and the military buys cheap carpet so they can afford to replace it every 4 or 5 years...so hopefully they'll take it easy on me about that.  I'm having it professionally cleaned before we leave anyway, just to show them that we've made and are continuing to make an effort to maintain it.

The military expects a certain amounf of 'fair wear and tear', especially when families have children, so I'm probably worrying about nothing.  However....if we get fined for it, we get fined for it.  There's nothing I can do.  I do think that that will be the only thing that fails us tho.  The rest of it (bathrooms and appliances) is so clean you could literally eat your dinner off of it.

That's not gonna cut it since I prefer to eat off of the floor! Get to work on that carpet!

Get to work on that carpet!

Screw it.  I called Stanley Steemer and they guarantee their work, so they can come and clean it.  We get something called a 'Dislocation Allowance' that's supposed to be used to offset the cost of moving, so I'll fork out the $140 with pleasure if it means we pass inspection first time.

Phew, that's a load off my mind.  I'm still going to shampoo it myself, of course, this weekend (pre-inspection is next Monday and I don't want them to think that we live like pigs), but at least now I can say that I already arranged to have it professionally cleaned.

Wow, you are very busy. I remember how big a deal it was to clean after an apartment so I feel for you. I hope it goes smooth!

We opted to get the professionals in for the carpet and the cleaning - We ended up having to get them back - I don't think we lost our bond because they guarentee their work and if yuo're not happy they come back for free but yeah
You sound way more organised then we were - but you way longer to travel

Well, I can't see paying over $200 for someone to come and clean the stove, bathrooms and fridge, on top of the $140 for the carpet.  That's the going rate.  I think I'm in the wrong business.  Perhaps at our next base I should go and clean other people's houses.

sheesh, just reading that made me tired!

Yeah, and I still have more to do!  I'm cleaning the oven again....I made roast this evening for supper, and that's the last time I'm using the oven before we leave so I figured while it was warm I'd make the most of it and clean it.  That's one less thing I have to do later.

Now if I can just get the disaster area that is my garage under control...I'm sure I'd feel much more relaxed about the whole situation.

I'm wound so freakin' tight it's unreal....and I know it's unnecessary, but I can't seem to unwind myself.  Every little thing is getting to me.  The kids, the house, the packing, my husband coming home....all of it.  I need to give myself a time-out, I think, from everything.  I would have gone to the pool this afternoon, but if I had, I'd have only sat there and fretted about what all I had to do at home and how I could be there taking care of it.

Arrgghhh!  I hate moving!  I mean, I'm sooo looking forward to this assignment being over with and moving on, I just don't like the packing, cleaning, inspection part.  On the bright side, however, it's forced me to minimalize even more.  I have an excuse to go through EVERYTHING now....

I feel your pain dharma. I hope your lovely children are giving you a hand in all of this. I haven't read your blog enough to know their exact ages but I think that anyone over five can at least use a dust rag and help mom out. My mom was a firm believer in this and she let us know it lol. Good luck I hope everything goes well!!!!

My eldest, Shea, is a good girl and helps me out quite a bit...this morning she pulled nails and I spackled.  She's 11.

My boys (9 and 8)...well, they help best when they go outside to play.

Heh. Truer words have never been spoken.

Moving sucks. I've moved regularly about every two years for the last ten, and it seems that we accumulate more shit with each move.

This last move consisted of driving 5,000+ miles in the course of six days. It sucked.

Yuck! I hate moving out of rental housing. It seems even when you leave it better than you found it, they manage to find somthing wrong. Good Luck!
