An hour and a half from now, I will be holding one half of a giant pair of scissors and cutting the ribbon to oficially open the new homes that have been built on the other side of this base (the VP of the housing company will be holding the other).
My family and I have been chosen to be the ribbon cutting family because we've lived in the crappy homes the longest - homes that will be demolished a week or so after we move out. The military is recognizing the role that the spouse plays in the grand scheme of things, so I'll be the one doing the actual cutting. I'm very nervous; the local and base papers will be there and we've been told that there will be a lot of photo taking and that we'll end up on the front page of the base paper - eek!
The new homes are just fabulous. They all have fenced in yards (the military doesn't always provide fencing for their houses, it's something you have to do for yourself), 2 car garages, 2 1/2 bathrooms, carpeting and hardwood floors throughout, a huge living room and kitchen, 4 bedrooms (the master has an en-suite bathroom) brand new appliances.....they are, as I said, fabulous. Compared to what we're living in now, the new house is palatial, and I can't wait to move in.
We're not actually moving until June 5th. The government gave us the option of moving ourselves or having a company come in and move us - and we chose the company. We've moved ourselves before, and it wasn't a whole lot of fun, and that was before I got hurt. With things being what they are with my back and Dave's knee, we decided that having someone come and move us would be the best option. So, the packers are coming on the 4th and we're moving out of this house and into the new one on the 5th. I'm ecstatically happy about it, in case you couldn't tell. We've never had a brand new home before, we've always had a house that other people have lived in - as have most other military families. This time, though, things are going to be different. We're not going to have to deal with other people's nail holes in the walls or the wear-and-tear marks and nicks and dings in the walls and on the floor. We're going to be the first ones to live in the house, and that makes me very happy.
I do believe that I'm in danger of being houseproud.
Me, houseproud.
It's a freakin' miracle.
