I am so mad I can hardly string together a sentence.

Nick Berg. Dead. Decapitated, on TV, by members of Al Queida.

In retaliation, supposedly, for the prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib.

As much as I am ashamed at what happened in that prison and think that the perpetrators of the abuse should be held accountable for their actions....I am still outraged at this atrocity. And I don't understand why more people aren't.

That's all I can say for now. I'm still too mad to think properly.

I dont think the killing had anything to do REALLY with the prison. But groups like that will use such a subject that is already an issue with the american people, and throw more fuel on the fire.

Yes it IS a tragedy for his family and it's even sadder since he was supposed to be coming home right away anyways. Another senseless death. But to keep things in perspective we should note that even the US uses collective punishment for unrelated crimes. Of course it's not cutting of their heads or anything but still, one must expect retaliation when horrendous abuses are exposed to the Iraqi population. Consider: For a year now they've been hearing the CPA tell them how the US is helping them, how they're doing such good things for Iraq...when they see the truth of course they're pissed. Wouldn't you be dharm? I would be. Like I said, for every Iraqi killed or abused, there are families wanting revenge against the US. It's the snowball effect. It's a shame the US had to invade Iraq over false pretenses. All these killings and deaths..all for nothing. Do you even care that over 50,000 people have been killed there with no signs of letting up? The lies for war are responsible for all the deaths in Iraq..all of them. In other terms, if the US didn't lie and invade another sovereign country which posed no threat to the world, then over 50,000 people would still be alive and well. You're pissed about this? I'm pissed about how the lies killed so many innocents.

You know what, Miki, I'm really tired of listening to idealistic bullshit.

Oh, and if you believe that every Iraqi in that jail was innocent, or if every Iraqi that has been killed in this was thus far was innocent...well, you're more deluded than I first thought. None of that excuses the behaviour demonstrated by those unsupervised weekend warriors, but this....this execution....

..I'll put it this way, if I had the opportunity to go fght in Iraq tomorrow, I'd go. Without a doubt.

The terrorists who killed Nick Berg stated that it was in response to the prison abuse, and that they had tried to negotiate an exchange of Nick Berg for Abu Ghraib prisoners.

Yes, Shades, that what they said..unfortunately I think it wasn't really the reason for it. I don't think they needed a reason for it. I think they were going to do it regardless and that they'd have used anything as their reason or cause.

I'm feeling physically ill as well. Can you imagine what that man's family must be going through?

5 strokes is what they used to hack his head off.

Sorry Dharm if 'ideological bullshit' only serves to make you angry. Why is it hard for you to look at the ultimate factor in this poor guy's death? I think you're outrage is misdirected. People said this was going to happen.

Don't worry, you didn't. I had misread the first time around and hadn't realized that Jeremy was questioning the reason they gave, as opposes to not having heard the reasons.

I think Dharma has every right to be outraged over this brutal murder. I don't believe that this was an inevitable consequence of being in Iraq -- just as I don't think violations of the Geneva Convention are inevitable. If you are going to be outraged at the prison abuses, you have to be outraged by this. A human life is a human life--and they can't be replaced. Miki, you have no problem remembering that Iraqis are human beings with inalienable human rights, I implore you to give that same status to Americans. Nick Berg was a civilian--there's no questioning that. What happened to him was disgusting...that too is undeniable. Forget your politics for a minute, silence your rhetoric, and mourn the death of a fellow human being.

I am outraged that this guy was butchered like that. I'm upset that POW's were tortured. The whole war, the loss of life, the bullshit that accompanies it, it all sickens and saddens me. However, I can still see the bigger picture. War is hell, but sometimes war is necessary.

Please use your own blog to spout off your conspiracy and lie theories. At least I have the option of not going there.

I'm still not sure how to react to what happened. This man wasn't "tortured" he was killed in a very inhumane way. People can bitch endlessly about how the Iraqis were treated, but they are still alive. They weren't brutally murdered. Ack...I really can't say what I am really thinking at this point.....

Though I have just paged through the press released photos and read the story and do feel indeed sick as a result, I imagine I would feel much the same way if we had any such photos of those fallen in this war. Once is becomes a personal glimpse of someone we are mortified. But when we're given simple body count numbers on the evening news we begin to feel very little.

Who knows how much more to this story there might be, but for now I will join the rest of you in being both saddened and disgusted.
