My husband and I are going to my daughter's school for an assembly this afternoon.

She's been nominated as Student Of The Month and the assembly is in her honor.  Dave and I will stand in front of the entire school and hand Shea her certificate and prize.

Shea's ecstatically happy about it - she says that it's usually the Preps or the Plastics that get this award, and seeing as she identifies herself as a member of the Punk crowd she feels like she's going to be representin' for them.  She's said that she's going to give the rawk 'n' roll 2-fingered salute (index and pinky fingers up in the air, the other 2 fingers held down with the thumb) when she's walking up to the front of the auditorium, and she's gone off to school this morning wearing her best punk-y outfit (the best one that's acceptable for wearing to school, that is).

I'm so proud of that kid.  She's an outstanding student and she absolutely deserves to be recognized like this.  She's also a good kid; she helps out at home, doesn't get into too much trouble and isn't afraid to be different.  She's not one to do what the rest of the flock are doing, put it that way.

I'm taking the camera, so pictures will certainly be forthcoming....

That is a great honor!  I know you and Dave are busting you buttons as well!  Congrats to Shea, and to her parents!

What is a "plastic"? I know what a prep is, although we didn't have them in my school. My school didn't have the big "cliques" that Missy said were in her school. Yeah, different people had their own set of friends, but they weren't really seperated by what type of people they were. Plus i was friends with nearly everyone, so I wouldn't have fit into any particular clique. Anyway, I still want to know, what is a "plastic"?

Rawk On, Shea!!!!

That's what I said!

Congrats to Shea,

I'll pass that along!

Anyway, I still want to know, what is a "plastic"?

A Plastic is a girl who dresses in the very latest fashions, who doesn't care about anything but her style, her dress size, her hair and makeup and her shoes.  She's the kind of girl who will get breast implants when she's 14 and who will look down her nose at anyone who has pimples, is over a size 3, or who dresses differently than she does.  She'll model herself on Paris Hilton or Nicole Ritchie and will got stick her fingers down her throat after she's eaten anything more than a carrot stick and a saltine cracker.

Shea is SO not a plastic, and I am ecstatically happy about that.

Tell her congrats and way to go

I certainly will!

First thing I thought was "rock on," too. Maybe it's too obvious, but it's certainly fitting.

Basically, she rules. Definitely your daughter, but also definitely her own person.

Congrats to Shea

Thanks!

Her teacher talked about her individuality as she was lising the reasons Shea won the award.  She said that she's unafraid to be who she is, but she never neglects her responsibilities in other areas - that she's an awesome student and an awesome person too.  As they announced her name, Dave and I came running into the auditorium and the applause was simply deafening.  I gave her and her crowd of friends the rawk n roll salute and yelled 'rawk on, sisters!' as she was coming down the steps of the bleachers, and they all saluted me back and screamed and yelled.  Now they all think I'm the coolest mom ever and want to come over and hang out at our house  (I've tried to tell kids who think I'm cool that I'm really a bitch, but they don't believe me....they're blinded by the purple hair).  The teachers all said that they can see now where Shea gets her individuality from - and that was exactly what I was hoping for.  I WANTED them to see that.

She's sleeping over at her friend's house tonight, and this friend's mom is taking them to the mall - and STAYING there with them, not just dropping them off and running like the last mother did.  So, Dave and I have given Shea some cash to go and spend at Hot Topic.  It's not much, but it's enough for a CD or a T-shirt and some food.  She's pretty happy about that.

She truly is an awesome kid, and I'm very, very proud of her.

Hook 'em horns!

Dude, did you see the UT/Texas Tech game this weekend?

Wait. What was this article about?

edit: Incidentally, it has been decided that this hand signal will also be used for "squad wedge" in our upcoming field exercise. Not my idea.
