The repercussions of the school shooting in Joplin, Missouri, have reached sleepy little Mascoutah in Illinois - where 2 out of my three kids attend school.

The superintendent has decided to enforce a new rule to hopefully avoid a similar crime happeneing here.

Have they put metal detectors at the entrances?

No.

Are there security personnel wandering the hallways, searching students, their bags and their lockers?

No.

Is there and emergency drill that students and teachers are to follow should there be a threat?

No.

So what have they done, you ask?  I'll tell you.

Students are no longer allowed to wear sweatshirts in school.

Yep.  The Mascoutah school district (in it's enigmatic wisdom) has decided that the best way to avoid an act of violence involving a firearm is to ban sweatshirts.  Not just hoodies, mind you; all sweatshirts are banned.

I used to joke that this school district hired from the bottom of the teachers-for-hire barrel. When I say that in the future, I won't be joking.

I believe that the shooter was also wearing pants. They didn't ban those as well?

Believe it or not, I am not surprised.  I worked for a school system for several years, and saw the stupid rules they made.  They accomplish nothing, except to justifiy the salary of the brain dead administrators.

Yep, I think kids should all go to school in leotards. That would solve so many problems. How boneheaded can you be? So are sweaters allowed? I think I would have to bitch and send a letter to the editor of the paper and go to school board meetings and tell them how retarded they are. What a shining example of problem solving to model for the kids in that school district.

That'll be next.  Seriously, it wouldn't surprise me if they banned those too.  They've got so many bans on clothing items it's ridiculous.  The kids can't wear anything with skull and crossbones on it because the administration say it's a gang symbol, but kids can wear G-unit clothing and sport red and blue bandanas (I don't think they've heard of the bloods and crips).  They've also been told that they cannopt wear anything that might offend another student, which is so stupid I couldn't believe it at first.  I called the school, and yes, it's true.  They don't seem to understand that no matter what you wear, someone, somewhere will find it offensive.

This school district is exquisitely stupid, especially with the dress code.  I asked them why they didn't just make the kids wear khaki's and polo shirts as a uniform, and they said they didn't want to take away the kid's individuality - but then they go and make all kinds of dress code rules that make it impossible for the kids to show any kind of indiviuality whatsoever.

Yes, it would solve all kinds of problems, wouldn't it?

So are sweaters allowed?

I don't think so.  I don't know WHAT they expect the kids to wear when it's freezing cold, but if one of my kids comes home shivering because they were cold in school all day I'll keep the home until the school turns up the heating.

I've emailed the superintendent and the principal, and I've got a rough draft of the letter to the local newspaper on the go as well.

You're right about the example of problem solving.  This is typical small-minded behaviour, though.

I guess the superintendant would have  a problem if a nudist went bonkers and shot up a school... What would he ban then...

"No Human Bodies Beyond This Point"

Damn!  There goes my streaking!

Oh yeah, small empires ruled by very small minds, by the sound of it. Where ever you go in the world, there are some things that stay the same.

"No Human Bodies Beyond This Point"

That's coming next.  I wouldn't be a bit surprised if that didn't happen.

Damn! There goes my streaking!

*sings* That's why they call him the streak....

small empires ruled by very small minds, by the sound of it.

Oh yeah.  Tiny, tiny minds and even tinier empires.  I thought that when we moved here we'd find a school district that was slightly more hip and bohemian than the schools in South Dakota were - this being a part of the Greater St Louis Metropolitan area and all.  What we've found is that South Dakota had FAR better schools than here, and we're wishing we could go back there.
