GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Published on August 9, 2006 By dharmagrl In Health & Medicine

I'm frustrated to the point of anger with the military medical system.

I called YESTERDAY to see if I could get a blood or urine test ordered for Jake so we could put this 'does he have diabetes' thing to rest.

I hadn't recieved a reply 26 hours later, so I called back.  I didn't understand what was so fekkin' difficult to understand about my request that it took over 24 hours.

After 30 mins on the phone and three people later, I'm no further forward.

ALL I WANT IS TO BE ABLE TO BRING MY KID IN AND HAVE SOMEONE WHO IS A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL TEST HIS BLOOD SUGAR.

I don't want to take up an acute care appointment with a child who isn't sick. I hate it when people do that, and I refuse to be a hypocrite and do it myself.

I don't want a routine appointment 2 weeks from now, or even one next week.  If he IS in fact diabetic, that's an awful long time to wait with high blood sugar.

ALL I WANT IS FOR A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL TO PRICK HIS FINGER AND TEST HIS BLOOD SUGAR.  TOMORROW.  TODAY.  BEFORE THE WEEKEND. WE DON'T NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR UNTIL WE SEE HIS BLOOD SUGAR RESULT.

Why is that so difficult for them to understand????????  They act as if I'm being difficult, and I'm really not.   They have walk-in strep throat tests and walk in wart removal; they even have walk in for UTI's....so why can't I bring my child to the clinic and get a simple glucose test?  Why is that so fekkin' hard???

I don't want to waste anyone's time with a child who's not ill.  All I want is a simple test.

I'm done with them.  I'm going to WalGreens to get a box of urine test strips, and I'm measuring his urine glucose level myself.  If it's over 200, I'm taking him to the ER.  If it's high or even on the high end of normal, I'll make an appointment for him to be seen.  If it's normal.....well, then I don't have anything to worry about and we won't have wasted the doctor's time.

Why doesn't anyone in the military medical system understand that, for feck's sake!?????

MY GAWD THESE PEOPLE ARE EEJITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess it would help if I actually got to speak to a military member instead of a GS2 civilian who doesn't know what the feck I'm talking about.  I think that's been the problem with this palava I've been dealing with.  Civilians who don't know how the military works only serve to clog up the system and frustrate people!!!

All I want is a simple blood or urine test.  Why is it so hard to get?

Do it!  Sorry for the hassles.  I actually have been there as a dependant.

But at least you can do a test on your own.  I would get him an appointment even if it looks normal.

best of luck, sorry for the hassle.

I think we may have an old meter laying around the house. I'm gonna check. I can't send you the one I know I have because Michelle is using it to monitor her sugar during the pregnancy. Other than that she really only has to monitor her sugar when she is feeling weird.

She has been a diet controlled diabetic all of our marriage and it isn't so bad. She still has issues if she eats a box full of chocolates but as long as she doesn't go too far she is cool.

I hope things work out with the urine strips and I am going to check to see if we have an extra meter laying around the house.

Oh the frustration of dealing with the base clinic. I'm so glad that we get to see a civilian doctor now. It's like a whole different world. That's what happens when you're tricare prime remote.

My 2 cents is just to make the acute care appointment. At least, it would save you the money of having to buy a home testing kit. That's probably just their protocol, like it or not. See the doctor, get the referral for the test. There are no options. This is how we do it here whether it makes any sense or not.

I hope your kiddo is okay.

I don't know if you can do this....

Could you call and get a telephone consult with your Dr or his nurse?

Call and say you wanna speak to the Dr...then he'll call you back...tell him what is happening and that you want labs ordered for your son.

He will mostly likely do that (as all it entails is putting it in the system)and you can take him into the lab first thing.

This always worked with every military Dr I ever had when I wanted labs done.

Good idea, Tova. I don't know if it works different for AF or at different bases, but I'm always able to leave a message for my dr and have her get back to me within a few hours.

Karen, I'm really hoping the best for your little guy. This has got to be so stressful for your family.
