My birthday is the friday after next, and Dave's been asking me what I want.  I haven't been able to come up with anything; my desires have decreased as I get older and I haven't been able to come up with anything that I REALLY want.

Until today.

We live on an Air Force base that has a private Aero Club for people who have little Cessnas and prop jobs to tool around in.  The Aero Club has just started offering a one hour inital training flight for $60, where you get to sit in the cockpit and wear a headset and see all the stuff that goes on up there during take off and flight...and they even let you take control of the plane for a few seconds.

That's what I want for my birthday.

I'm going flying, y'all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ME!!!!  FLYING A PLANE!!!!!!!!!!!  I know it's only for a few seconds, but how many people can say that they've actually taken control of an airplane?!!!  Not many!

We have to decide the actual date and time of the flight, but we're pretty certain that it's either going to be on my birthday or the weekend after.  I'm so excited I can hardly stand it!!!!!!!!  Dave said he's going to give the pilot our digital camera and ask him to take some pics of me at the controls so we'll always have a record of me flying for my birthday.

I don't think I've been this excited about a birthday in years.  It's like I'm a kid again!

I'm going flying!  WOO HOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

Careful now! It might just get in your blood! Flying has always run in our family with me being about the only exception of males having a flying license. My dad used to fly when I was a kid and my uncles all flew and my cousin who graduated from Annapolis flew planes off aircraft carriers in the mid 70's. He was with the U.S.S. Ranger I believe. I just never took the time or the big desire to scrape up the $$$ to learn, although I have held the controls for awhile.

Anyway, it IS fun! But an expensive hobby! I've always heard there was a comonality of minds of people with motorcycles and airplanes so I guess I took the cycle (and cheaper) route. So have a happy birthday up there in the wild blue yonder!

Oh, I think I will....even if it's overcast I will!

This year you fly, next year we jump!!

Dude, I would be honored to do a tandem jump with you, and if there's any way we can make that work...I'd love to.  Truly love to!

That will be awesome and that is a really great price. My FIL loves airplanes, airshows, does flight simulators on his computer. I would love to give him something like this as a gift but all the one's I've seen are way high dollar and way out of my budget.

Have fun. I always loved flying. I grew up an Air Force brat and have done a lot of it my life. Probably why I went into aviation in the Navy.

Try the suggested jumping. Nothing like that rush.

LW,

Your comment reminds me of an exchange between myself and some friends while I was taking ground school.

Me: Whenever I get my license, I'd love to get a permit to fly over the Grand Canyon.

Friend #1: Well, keep me in mind when you do. I'd love to parachute out over the Grand Canyon.

Friend #2: You'd go up in a plane with HIM?

Friend #1: Sure. I've got the parachute, remember?

Little Whip
Now why in the world would you jump out of a perfectly good airplane?

Perfectly Good Airplane: Any airplane with a jump door ;~D

I'd love to strap you to me and soar through the sky, but unfortunatly I'm not rated for tandem jump. However, when you are ready to put your knees in the breeze for the first time, I'd love to be part of it... You always remember your first, right? :~D

I'm not sure I'm allowed to, Ted.  I'll ask the doctor the next time I see him and see what he says.

What a rush!

Oh yeah, I'm thinking that it's going to be amazing!

Congrats D! Oh, and early happy birthday wishes.

Thank you, Lucas.  You really should get out and live a little, you know? Take some risks....go flying in a plane for an hour or something that gets your blood pumping.

Congrats, again. I second lifehappens' request for pictures

Oh, rest assured, there WILL be pictures.  It's going to be my first time at the controls....I'm going to want something to remember it by!!
