Yesterday Momma and The Big Guy came home with some other dawg.  I could hardly believe it.  I'M the only dog around here, I thought that they knew that.  So, I had to make sure that this other dawg knew that me, Henry, was the king of this house.  She had the audacity to get too close to MY toy, so I growled at her and showed her my teeth so that she'd know I wasn't messing around.  Anyway, we went outside and I was surprised to find out that she knew how to play.  I was pretty impressed with that.  So, we played for a while, and then we came in and hung out and I let her get a snack and a drink out of my water dish, and then I said goodbye to her before I went to bed. I figured that her folks would come and pick her up and take her home - I figured that they'd just bought her over to play for a while because her folks had something else to do and we were just watching her.

I was WRONG.  When I got up this morning, SHE WAS STILL HERE!!!!!!! And guess what?  She slept with my Momma and The Big Guy.  I could hardly believe it.  I was mad at her, and I showed her my teeth again.  She just sat there and looked at me with her smushed up face (what's with that, anyway?  It looks like she ran into the wall or something).  Then my Momma picked me up and told me that she wasn't going to go away, that she was STAYING here.  As in LIVING here.  FOR GOOD.

Well.  If that's going to be how it is, then I have to make sure that she knows that this is MY house.  HENRY'S house, not Gracie's house.  So, when she wanted to play, I played HARD with her.  I rolled her around - I tried to, anyway.  She's got waaaay longer legs than me, and that makes it hard to flip her over because she's taller than I am.  She plays pretty good, though.

I was just getting used to the idea of her sticking around as long as she knew that it was me, Henry who was in charge when something happened that made me really, really upset.

She sat in The Big Guy's chair with him. Yes, she did.  Sat right up there like she was the queen.  And get this - when I went to get up there, The Big Guy told me 'no Henry.Let her alone for a bit'.

I couldn't believe my ears.  He told me, Henry, that I wasn't allowed up there because SHE was there.  How RUDE.  That's my spot in that chair.  That's where me and The Big Guy hang out and do guy things like fart and scratch ourselves.

I tell ya, some things are going to have to change if she's going to live here.  I'm not putting up with this stuff.  I think that the cat and I are going to have a vote (the cat doesn't like her AT ALL.  She used her spiky things on her, but it didn't seem to bother her.  She didn't do crackerdawg - I'm not sure she know how), and I think that this Gracie dawg is going to get booted off the island.  I'm not sure how Momma and The Big Guy are going to take that news - they'll probably just ignore us like they usually do.  So much for democracy, huh? So, if she stays, she's going to have to learn that it's me, Henry, who is in charge.  I'm the top dawg in these here parts, and she'd better learn that pretty darn quick.

Hmmmph. I dunno why they needed another dawg anyway.

I assume Henry has been neutered?

Henry,

Sorry to hear you're so upset about the new addition, but you got to realise your family has lots of love to share. Sometimes, there is just not enough animals in a house to give all the love they have so that is why they got Gracie to stay. Don't worry, they still love you as much as ever. So long as you were first, you'll always be top dawg.

See, and I was going to say that love is like a hot snack. There's only so much to go around.

Pup, I'm not sure why sometimes people need to get another dawg. In a great way, I know what you're saying. Why couldn't your love be enough? But that's the way it is, sometimes.

Good luck. You've got two options: Punish them for choosing another dawg, or try to be the best dawg that you can. It's kind of a short-run/long-run option... Short-run, revenge (hot doggy snacks on the carpet, eating the cat snacks and then kissing Momma) seems more attractive but if you can bring your doggy brain to think long-run... bettering yourself as a dawg is the way to go.

Again, good luck.

Henry, you know how you and your cousins like to chase cars?  Well, her ancestors caught them!  With their face!

YOu are still top dawg!  Besides, she does not write amusing stories (she is probably not old enough to write yet anyway).

He's slated for the snip later this month.

Exactly.  It's like apples and oranges; we like each of them equally.

He's been much better since we got Gracie.  MUCH.  Like 75% improvement in his behaviour.  We're all very impressed and are making sure that Henry gets as much love as Gracie does.

Yep, he is.  He's the alpha-dawg, the one in charge.  He's been given the responsibility of showing Gracie the way things work around here, and so far is doing a decent job of it!
