I about puked.

Isn't it funny how certain smells remind you of certain things?

When I was pregnant with Davey I had horrible morning sickness....actually it was all day sickness, there really wasn't a time in the first 24 or so weeks that I didn't feel nauseated. Dave had bought me a bottle of 'Giorgio' for Christmas and I wore it all the time when I was first pregnant.....I smelled it today for the first time in ages and about barfed. As soon as the smell hit my nostrils I had a wave of nausea wash over me and really did think I was going to puke for a couple of seconds.

It got me thinking about what other smells trigger memories....

Line dried laundry - reminds me of Mondays at home when I was growing up. Mondays were wash days and I remember coming in the house after school and being greeted by that smell. mum would be there, ironing away, and that smell would just be everywhere. I have 'Yankee Home 'Clean Cotton' candles in my house now, and I think that's why I like the smell of Tide 'Clean Breeze' so much...reminds me of back then.

'Imperial Leather' soap (it's British). My grampy (mum's dad) smelled like that all the time.

Pipe tobacco smoke. My Uncle Smokey. He had a pipe perpetually hanging from his lip and a notch in his front teeth where it fit.

Raw garlic...the home of the people that we stayed with when we went to France. The Guillon's were (are) awesome people, and smelling raw garlic when I'm cooking evokes memories of french chateaus and long lunches with all the family and friends around the table. Good times, really good times.

Leather...Dave when we first starting dating. He had this heavy black leather biker jacket and I'll never forget the way it smelled and the way it creaked when he put his arms aound me. More good times......

Bread baking, or freshly baked bread....when I was a little girl me and Mum used to go into town shopping on Friday mornings. One of the stores we went to had a bakery and we used to go get bread that was still warm from the oven. I find that smell very comforting these days..

So, what smells remind you of stuff?

when I was pregnant with Kole, I used to live above a store called the Pita Pit. To this day, I can not even fathom the idea of walking in there and ordering one. I remember before having Kole, I used to love their food.
My list includes:

zippo lighters... remind me of my poppa
sweetgrass...reminds me of my birthmother's home
vanilla... poo. We used to have a vanilla scented room deodorizer that got placed in the bathroom... you know where I am going with this one.
Quaker Oats factory...Purina Dog Chow factory. I lived in cities that had both companies. It's both eerie and sick to know that both factories smelled alike.

Funny, either Misfit Chicks or Karen Hobbs wrote a post like this a couple of months ago. In your earlier blog, you stated that you have only been writing at Joe User a month now. It seems like you've been here forever!

For me it's those hockey puck looking pine scented toilet deodorizers. It seemed that every pub in England has one of those in their potty...I can't smell one without thinking "public bathroom" closely followed by "eeewwww".

Coffee beans remind me of my grandparents house; there was a factory down the road from them that roasted and processed the beans..if the wind was right you got that smell all day.

It seems like I've been here forever to me too! I'm actually getting quite attached to the people I've met...I think about you, in particular, throughout the day..as well as imajinit, brokedownprincess, jeremyG, Muggaz, Bulboushead (!?), Jilluser, Trinitie, Poet, of course Sir Peter..even Marvin occasionally! Isn't that strange? How we've never met but can have an impact in each other's lives?

When I was pregnant with my twins smells really bothered me. I can't stand fish soup or a garlic soft cheese because of it. The smell of fish sauce reminds me of my south east Asian friends and my favorite smell is the smell of rain.

Well I've never been pregnant, and it would be very interesting if I ever was. I'm trying to think if there are any odors that stir up a lot of memory but I can't think of any right now. I think I'm more tuned in to music as reminding me of particular travels, people, etc..

So tell me about that then...I'd like to know if you got pregnant too.....

I'm a big fan of certain smells...

fresh cut hay... (if you're a countryboy or girl, or a cowboy or girl, then I need not say more)

My girlfriend's perfume... (need i say more on that one?) 'course, there's another smell associated only with my girlfriend that I truly love, but we don't need to talk about that...

the barn

the hydraulic fluid, oil, JP-8, and other 'nasty smells' associated with being an airplane mechanic. i can't help that one, I loved that job...

there are more, but that's all I can think of right now...

i think this reply is eerily similar to the reply that I left on the last article like this one...

I love the smell of hay too...used to go help on the farm down the street as a kid and feed the orphan lambs in the barn.

Dave doesn't wear cologne so I can't say that I can relate on that..but I do like the smell of him. I had him leave me the shirt that he wore the day before he left..it's on my pillow and I can still smell him on it. Very comforting...

So, are you back together, MJ? I hope so. How was skydiving, btw?
on Mar 15, 2004
we're officially back together, but she can't tell her friends that... they just wouldn't understand... I'm leaving for the desert in June, and she's leaving for Alabama in August, so we're gonna have to do the long distance thing fer a while... a long while... But things will work out...

skydiving was the bomb... i posted an article on it of course, but I didn't do the experience any justice. There's just no way to put it into words... you'll have to try it

Smells that I associate with:

cherry pipe tobacco- grandpa smoked it when I was little

I'm with ya on the hay- I am a hick from the sticks

motor oil- makes me think of my dad. He was always working on a car, truck, dune buggy, etc.

orange hand cleaner- dad again. Used it to get the oil and gease off.

Chanel #5- my mom's fragrance.

suntan lotion- Hawaii!

That is all I can think of at the moment. I don't have any bad associations from pregnancy since I didn't have morning sickness. I made up for it in stretch marks!
on Mar 15, 2004
scotch and lavender-my grandma
idodine and vaseline-my poppy (he thought those two could cure anything)
sunflower-scents-my mom...theyre her favorites
hugo or hot chocolate-nathan
my cats fur....very comforting as i tend to snuggle them when im crying

Stale Beer...Pool Hall of youth
Cheap cigars...Little league coach

I forgot about gunpowder and Hoppes oil, those remind me of Dave too....

You went to basic at Ft Leonard Wood, Dynosaur? Dave went there for Military Police Investigator school a couple of years ago.
