Our friend Reggie and his wife are expecting a baby next month, and I've been knitting them a layette set consisting of a blanket, a hat and some booties.
I wanted to make it a little different, so I made the blanket with a red yarn. It's a really cook blanket, and knitting it was good practice for Jill and Brad's layette (I'm making them a similar layette for their soon to be n00b). I wanted to break free of the monotony of pastel colors that most baby items come in - I like my knitting projects to be a little cooler, a little out-of-the-ordinary. Red seemed to be the best choice - it's gender non-specific, it's bright, it's eye catching - it's just an awesome color to make a ton of things out of.
I needed to have a contrasting color to use for the hat and the bootees, (I'm going to embellish the blanket with the contrsting color so it all looks like it belongs together) and my initial thought was to use black. I knitting a sample black and red beanie, and to be honest, I didn't really like it. It would be cool for a grown up or an older kid, but for a baby...it's a little morbid. I didn't want to use white, that'd make the whole thing look like a baby santa layette, and green jus doesn't work with the red that I'm using. So, I decided to use navy blue. I'm about halfway through the hat, knitting alternating blue and red stripes, and it's looking awesome. This is the first time I've made this particular hat, but if it turns out well I'm going to add it to my 'most knitted' file.
So, project 'bad-ass baby blanket' should be completed and ready to wrap by tomorrow afternoon. As soon as I'm done with that, I'm going to finish off the yoga socks I started 3 weeks ago and have just left sitting in my knitting basket....and once THOSE are done, I have another moebius scarf to make, and once THAT'S done I have some wrist warmers to make, and after THOSE.....
I have enough knitting projects to last me a lifetime.
