As I sit here, a fever simmering behind my eyes, I feel like I have a couple of hot rocks in my back.  Peeing has felt like passing fire for over a week now, and whilst I KNOW I have  UTI I think that I have a kidney infection to boot.

I should have gone to the doctor.  I should have gone and got seen.  But things have been so hectic...between Christmas and New Years and family and visits and travelling and all the other stuff that comes with the holidays - well, there just wasn't time.

So, I'm sitting here wondering whether this is worth a trip to the ER.  There isn't a clinic until Tuesday - that means that the ER will be packed with people who, like me, don't really have an emergency but who don't think they can wait until Tuesday to see a physician.

I think I'm too far gone for the cranberry juice remedy.  I've done it before, and it's never worked for me.  I'm taking tylenol and hoping that this will resolve itself.....and preparing myself for a trip to the ER if it gets worse.

Maybe if I go in at 10 at night it won't be so bad.......or perhaps 2am would be better.  Hmm.....

Nope, they gave me pills. One a day for 7 days.

I've had a few kidney infections- not fun at all.  If you are not allergic to penicillin, they can give you a shot of it and get the infection cleared up quicker (that's what I have had done in the past).  I am allergic to sulfa drugs, so I don't tolerate a lot of the antibiotics that they use.

Ouch. I only did the urinary tract infection thing once, and that was enough for a lifetime

OOOOHHHHH!!! I know how much it sucks for chicks so I can imagine how much worse it must be for dudes! Sorry, man!

I'm not tolerating this one well at all. I think I'm going to go see my doctor tomorrow and get him to switch me to penicillin - and maybe give me a shot of it, as you suggested.

Well, he said that I have chronic neuropathy from nerve damage, and that it's probably permanent. He started me on gabapentin (which is supposed to be good for nerve pain), upped the elavil I was taking to 100mgs at night (it works as a catalyst for pain meds), told me to change my fentanyl patch every 48 hours instead of 72, and gave me 90 percocet per month for breakthrough pain and for when I want to go work out and be active.

I have to go back once a month until we get to a maintenance dose of all the meds, then it's every three months. If we can't find a med that works, then there are invasive procedures that put implants and pumps in, but those are a last resort. He said that the last thing he's worried about is my being dependent on meds; it's better to take them, be active, pain free and happy than NOT take them and be miserable enough to be suicidal.

I thought the patch made you sick to your stomach? Keep us updated. I agree wholeheartedly with him...it's when you take the meds when you're NOT in pain when they become a problem. You've got active kids, and YOU in general, like to be active as well.

It's awesome that they're so empathetic. Lots of drs. don't have to deal with that chronic, horrid pain so they don't know what to do about it. I'm glad this dude does and hope that you're feeling well consistently soon.

How's peeing today?
