Isn't it funny how wives will sometimes assume that they know what their husband's want, only to find out that what they assumed they want isn't what they really want at all?

I thought that my husband had a 'thing' for long hair.  Hair that's longer than mine, anyway.  So, I've been growing mine out.  I've managed to get it to about jaw length, and I can style it in this flip-y shag style if I take the time to dry it and curl it.

We were sitting in the barber shop the other day, waiting for him to get his hair cut (actually it's more a question of shaving the back and sides of his head and taking some clippers to the top - a modified 'high and tight', if you know what one of those is).  He mentioned to me that my hair was getting long and asked when i was going to get it cut.  I said that i wasn't, that I knew he liked long hair and I was trying to grow it out for him.

Him: " I don't like long hair, not on you.  I prefer you with short hair."

Me: "Since when?"

Him: "Since always!  You just don't look like you with long hair.  I don't like it at all.  In fact, I liked your hair best when you had it in the elfie or pixie of whatever you call it cut, the one where it looked like you had bedhead all the time and when you colored it dark and had those bright red highlights in it"

Me: "Well why in the heck didn't you say so?!  I really liked it like that, but I got rid of it because I thought you didn't like it!"

Him: "Well, I'm telling you now.  I really like it like that."

Me: "Ooooo-kay...what else do you like or not like that you haven't told me about?"

So, I was wrong.  He doesn't like long hair.  And I am extremely thankful that he doesn't like it, because mine's been driving me nuts.  I can't do anything with it that doesn't involve a ton of gel and wax and hairspray and I don't like how that feels on my head.  Next week I'm going to go to the hairdresser and tell her to take it all off.  Razor cut it into a cute pixie that I can towel dry and style sans the aid of electrical equipment.  Then, I'm going to consider going dark red and putting some scarlet highlights in it.

And finally, I'm going to try to not assume what my husband likes anymore.  After 11 years I would imagine there's going to be a fair bit of stuff......

It's the same with kids... for years I served my son the breast of the chicken...simply because it is the part that i like so I assumed he did as well. One evening at mealtime, he served himself...taking a leg and theigh. I told him there were enough breasts and he could take one...his responce was, "I like the dark meat better!"
Never assume!!! COMMUNICATE!

Heh, long hair. Be lucky you look so good with short hair. I look really weird with short hair, so mine is fairly long. I would say it's reaching the lenght of almost half way down my back. It' so thick too. It's really hard to do anything with out hairspray(the almost whole bottle) and gel sometimes.

Never assume!!! COMMUNICATE!

You would have thought that after 11 years I would have learned that, wouldn't you?!   Sometimes I do ask becfore doing something, and he'll give me this look as if to say "why are you asking?  you know that by now..." - so I can't win.  If I assume, I'm wrong.  If I don't assume and ask, that's wrong too.  Oh well....

It's really hard to do anything with out hairspray(the almost whole bottle) and gel sometimes.

That's how my hair is when it gets longer.  It just lays there and doesn't do much without a whole lot of manipulation and excessive use of stylng products.  I don't like that way that stuff feels on my hair, and I also don't like having to take half an hour to style it only to have it fall flat after an hour of Illinois humidity...so short is much better for me.

Scarlet highlights.....now those I'm looking forward to having again!

Hey, if you knew everything about us, it would take the romance out of the relationship!  We need to keep you guessing on a couple of things at least!  After all, I for one will never say "I know my wife like the back of my hand".  Cause I hate to lie!

You are absolutely, 100% correct.  I don't advocate keeping secrets from your spouse or significant other, but I do think that keeping a slight air of mystery and unpredictability in your relationship helps to make things more interesting.  Throwing them a curve ball and doing something totally unexpected every once in a while is a really good idea...as long as it's unexpected-nice like breakfast in bed, flowers, a surprise gift...not unexpected-nasty like an affair, a STD etc etc.

Yeah, me neither. It takes me so long to do anything with it. Then I go to school and it just falls flat. Or if it rains and my hair gets wet, it turns into a big fuzz ball.

Ok, a question here for the ignorant folks amongst us (me)...

What the heck is a "pixie"? Pictures (of anyone with said hairstyle) would be helpful, rather than a verbal description.

One of the reasons I like hanging out with Life-happens is that I'm always finding out new stuff about her. She's never boring, and her hair looks great long or short, in many different colers. Every time we get back together, we get to get to know each other all over again... That's about the only advantage I can think of to all these separations.

Be greatfull, shhhhhhh between you and I , I have extremly long hair and its a pain inna ass to keep clean, and conditioned.

My wife has very short hair I watch her take 10 seconds to get it right and I spend days in front of mirror to get mine right then just get disgusted and throw it inna pony tail, which at last measurement was 27 inches long.

What the heck is a "pixie"?

This is a pixie.....and this is pretty much the color I'd like to have as well.  What d'ya think, Froggy?

That's about the only advantage I can think of to all these separations.

That's about the only advantage I can think of too.  The separations suck, but the reunions, as long as you don't have unrealistic expectations...well, they can be wonderful.

My hubby is really good, too good about telling me what he likes or doesn't.  We have been together for almost 13 yrs and learn new things about each other all the time.  Of course we also tell each other the same tired stories about ourselves for the bzillionth time too

D's not.  It makes for an interesting life, because I either have to ask outright or guess.

We tell the same stories over and over too....but for some reason, I never get tired of hearing them!

I like that hairstyle. I think you can pull it off because it suits your face. It's weird, but I think that hairstyle would look weird on some people...just not...right.

As for the color...well...red is all I gotta say.

Dharma, as you know, I too am a huge fan of the pixie cut. Zombie likes everything I do to my hair, so far. We call it "the mistress" factor. Only one time did I receive a negative response. I was considering going all black, having my hair straightened, and cut like a flapper from the '20's. My hair has a natural wave that I absolutely dispise. It isn't curly enough to look cute, and not straight enough to look sleek.

So before I went through with the whole staightening process, I had my hairdresser use the flat iron on my hair and style it like the flapper look I wanted.(mind you I had spent over a year growing my hair out to just at chin length). When I got home, Zombie looked appauled. He hated my hair straight. So off the hair came....at least then the waves aren't as unruly and noticeable.

Post pictures when you get the new "do".

Thanks, Froggy!  I like it too....I'm taking that picture in when I get it cut.  I find it easier to show them a pic than try to have them interpret what i want.

It's weird, but I think that hairstyle would look weird on some people...just not...right

Not many chicks can get away with having really short hair....at least not without looking a bit butch.  Heather and I are lucky, we have the kind of features that allow us to wear our hair really short and still look like girls.

As for the color....D says red as well and I think he's right.  The scarlet highlights are still a possibility though....!

I know, and it looks so darn cute on you!

Only one time did I receive a negative response.

I've had a couple more than that.  the thing is he doesn't really say much about my hair or my clothes unless it's something that he really doesn't like....so i end up knowing what he hates and very little else.  It's something that he's trying very hard to be better about, which is how I found out that he liked my hair short and dark...

I know exactly what you're talking about.  I can see you with black, but a jaw length bob...I just can't picture it for some reason.

Hmm...black hair....now there's a thought....!

I'll post pics, rest assured...
