I'm inspired to recount this tale by Myrrander's article about people smelling.....

I read this in a British magazine's 'Agony Aunt' column a few years ago, but it has stuck with me ever since - you'll see why.

As some of you may know, the British have a reputation for having horrible personal hygeine and bad teeth.  The following will only reinforce that reputation.

'Dear Deirdre,

I am a 42 year old man who has had a lady-friend for the last year and a half.  Things were going rather well until about 6 months ago, when she stopped wanting to have anything to do with me in bed.  She won't even let me kiss her anymore. At first I thought that perhaps had stopped loving me.  She said that wasn't it.  I asked her what in the world it could be, and she said it was beause I smell.  I don't understand how this can be.  I have a bath and brush my teeth once a week (whether I need it or not), and I wash my hands and face every morning and every night. I don't do a manual job, so I don't see how I could smell.  I really think that there's more to it than what she's telling me.  How can I find out the real reason behind her lack of interest?

Thanks a lot for your help....'

All I can say is......yukky!!!  YUKKY!!!!!

I don't care that I am deaf. I lived with it all my life, but inability to smell is very, very annoying even if I lived with it all my life too.

I never knew that you were hearing impaired...!  Do you sign?  I got up to a level 3 ASL.

I lost the ability to smell when I had a rotten cold a few months ago.  Drove me nuts; I didn't realize how much I relied on it until I didn't have it anymore!

Ahhhh......sweet roomate memories.

I can't forget waking up to the smell of my roomate in Korea a couple of times, when instead of the usual cloud of hops and whiskey, as I walked past, he'd gotten so drunk, that after passing out in bed, he'd woken up a couple of hours later and needed to pee, so rather than sort out the complex task of going to the bathroom, he peed all over his part of the room.

On the wall, the floor, the bed, the tv, and in his cd player, then tried to play a cd and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't play.....

On the flip side, Koreans very often smell of garlic.

I love the smell of kimchi and cigarettes in the morning.........no, really..............(bleh)

Just letting you know that the term "hearing impaired" is a insult term. I don't get offended by that but many does.

Yeah, ASL is my native language.

Yeah. Smell is pretty darned important. Too bad I lack that ability.

My hubby's freshman room mate smelled so bad Husband used to spray the guys bed with Lysol whenever he left the room.... Yuck!

As for my I am pretty darn clean, a bath in the morning and often a bath after work to relax. Unforunatly in the winter this is havoc on my skin. I use lots of baby oit and gallons of lotion.

XX~ I think ASL is really beautiful, I studided asl and deaf culture for a year and loved it. I have a friend that teaches at the deaf school near me, and she always tells us that at her school, those who don't know ASL are the ones who are impaired. I don't know what state you live in but in MN every two years they have AWARE FAIR, at a local mall, and this time it is this Sat. at the one I work at. I love aware fair. I am actually writing an opinon article on implants and would love your opinion on it, I will be posting it in the next few days.

Ooops...sorry!  That was the preferred term when I was taking ASL classes.  I'll remember that.....

Blah!

How anyone could go without a shower for that long is beyond me... But I propose an even worse bodily hygeine smell....

MORNING BREATH!!

There's nothing worse than a person who comes real close to talk ...and has not brushed their teeth first. Its like being hit with a sledgehammer.

MORNING BREATH!!

Oh, don't even get me started.  All these shows on TV and all these movies that show people kissing each other first thing in the morning....NOT!!!!  Never gonna happen!!!!! I'm very self concious of my morning breath, I don't like to get too close to anyone until I've had a chance to at least swish a bit of mouthwash around.  I know my breath smells when I first get up, I'm not going to subject anyone else to my nastiness!

LW, Udder Cream is the shit for really dry skin, and it's relatively inexpensive. Living in SD, I think I must have tried every lotion on Wal-Mart's shelves trying to get relief for my dry skin, and Udder Cream worked better than Keri or Lubriderm or Aveeno for me.  I use the Suave shampoo line as well, I particularly like the stuff that's supposed to be like Biolage.  Makes my hair really shiny and sleek, and it's cheap!

I am so tempted, when I'm standing in line behind a particularly nasty person at the store, to slip  a bar of soap or some deodorant  into their purchases.

Argh! Do people who are not absolutely normal in every single respect sit around together deciding what to be offended by next?? (Not to pick on deafness specifically, because it seems that every few years, people decide they're offended by whatever label is being used to describe their condition.)
When I took ASL (only two terms, and I've forgotten most of it, unfortunately), "hard of hearing" (sign: H, H) was the preferred term. Has that fallen from grace too? What's the preferred term now, and how long do we think it'll last?

I know. Like I said, I don't really care.

Hmm that is normal sign for people thats not deaf but rather have partal hearing ability. So far I know of, that's not a offendive term.. ( yet. )

If you want to learn what usually offends me ( and I'm sure most deaf people or hard of hearing ) read my blog.

So, it's okay to call a deaf person....deaf?  But it's not okay to call a short person 'short'.  We have to call them 'vertically challenged'.

Political correctness has gone insane.  I wholeheartedly agree with Citahellion...seems like there's always someone waiting to get offended.

Yeah. I usually go the UN-PC route. It's freaking insane. I suspect they are searching for excuses to be offended. Besides my deafness is not because somethings 'broken" but born as-is.

I suspect those people that is easily offended to be cognitively challenged. Edit: *cough* *cough* Sorry for hijacking your blog!
