I got my puppy today.....

His full name is Henry Ignatius...we call him Henry.  I haven't figured his kennel name out yet.  Any hints or suggestions are welcome...

He even peed when we took him outside!

Arer you going to cage train him

The breeder started to crate train him, and we're going to continue that.  He fell asleep on the couch earlier, so I moved him to his crate and he just went right back to sleep.  I'm not going to send him there as a punishment, or he'll start to look at it like it's a bad thing....I want him to feel secure and safe in there.

He knows his name already as well....as soon as we chose him they started calling him by his name, so he's used to it now.

We trained our girls kind of later in their life (3 and 4 years old). They took to it fairly easily but then when we flew from Hawaii to Ohio, they didn't like the crates too much. It took a few weeks after the drive to California for them to warm back up to them. In fact, by the time they were comfortable with them, I packed them up and put them in the storage closet because our shipment of furniture arrived. There's a lot less room here in this house. But they do have their little doggie beds for the daytime.

Thanks, Chip!  I'm kinda partial to him myself!

I think that once he's house broken I'll get him a doggie bed...if he can behave himself when no-one's home and not chew or destroy stuff then we can put the crate up and only use it for trips to the vet etc.

I'm going to go look for one of those bags that you can carry dogs around in...

My wife really likes those, too. We've seen some that we liked, but never at the store. When we ask people where they got theirs and follow up, we never seem to find the one we liked.

Another thing we saw once and thought about getting was a stroller type deal. It saw low to the ground and had a tall mesh all around the side and a hood that could provide shade. It was really pretty cool looking and we thought about getting it. It's still on our list of stuff we'd like to get someday...

They have some at petsmart.com...some Samsonite ones even!

dharma...well...first, I can't figure out how to make pictures work. I had a pretty fun picture of our fair former governor, Jesse Ventura that I would have liked to post for laughs.

Second...the pciture you have in your head of me is probably lots better than what's reality. Some things are best left to the imagination.

Awwww!  He's so cute!  Nothin' better than puppy breath!

If he's anything like my three, he'll like to chew on things.  But, they are smart little dogs and they are easy to train.

Keep posting pictures as he grows.  How much does he weigh?  It think ours were around 4 pounds when we got them.

He's about 3 1/2 pounds.  He was the runt of the litter...and yes, he likes to chew.  When he chews on us, we tall him "No" and give him one of his toys - hopefully he'll get the hint that people are not for gnawing on.

I love that puppy breath too.....

Yeah, good luck with that   Seriously, they are smart little guys and they do learn quickly, but he may still be a bit young to really train to do much of anything.  In a couple weeks he'll mind you a lot better.

Dachshunds also have cute little pudgy puppy bellies.  It's also amazing how much they can eat in comparison to their size!
