..this is powerful stuff...

I found this quote from the Upanishads:

'You are what your deep, driving desire is.
As your deep driving desire is, so is your will.
As your will is, so is your deed.
As your deed is, so is your destiny'

That statment has some powerful consequences. You desire has the power to make you, to complete you as a person...but it also has the power to totally destroy you.

It made me look at what my driving desire is.....

What's yours?

"Is that why you're doing it Dan? Because of the 'perks' you might get? Please tell me you're not serious...."

Of course not. But that doesn't mean I want my life to be one long streak of sorrow, painted with grief and filled in with misery. Essentially, I was paraphrasing a well-know verse of the bible: "Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven, and all else shall be added unto you."

Phew, that's a relief.

I don't think that anyone wants their life to be that..sad, and miserable. I think that your quote could also be paraphrased as: aim to live a good life, and your goodness will follow you. You will be rewarded for what you do: even if your reward is nothing more than the knowledge that you always did the right thing. I'm a firm believer in Karma....I've seen it happen. I also like the christian concept of 'do unto others..'

Agreed on all points. Sorry to worry you.

I'd have to say I'm driven by a desire to nurture people, to make everyone's life a little better when I leave it than it was when I came into it. Admittedly, it sounds corny, but it's who I've always been. I love to just DO for people, you know?

Yep, I do know, because I'm like that too. I don't like to 'do' in front of people though..I'd prefer to do it surreptitiously, sneakily even.

I like to do it sneakily and then tell people.

I know that's not a good thing and it's something I struggle with... it's a pride issue.

I found it quite refreshing to see so many people say that their desires are actually pretty selfless. It helps support my belief that most people are good at heart. Sometimes that belief is easily clouded because the few that are bad stick out in your mind so easily. We have a good crowd here at JU.

Dharma, it always warms my heart to get a "you're awesome" especially when it comes from someone I hold in high regard. Thanks!
