During my husband's long ongoing military career I have come to realize how important scent can be during a separation.

When he was gone for a year, he packaged up one of his T-shirts that he slept in for 4 days and sent it to me.  Opening that baggie and smelling him was like a punch in the gut for me.  It was so...potent.  It didn't smell bad, it just smelt like him, and it made me cry.  I ended up putting that shirt on a spare pillow and sleeping with it alongside me in our bed.

When I was little girl my mother used to wear lavender scented lotion on her hands and skin.  When it came time for me to go to school, she gave me a little bag filled with dried lavender that she had picked from the bush in our yard and told me that whenever I felt sad I was to hold that little bag up to my nose and it would help me not to cry.  To this day, I find lavender a comforting smell - in fact, I carry a pouch of dried lavender in my purse and knitting bag.

I find that smells evoke more memories for me than almost anything else.  My husband's grandfather, for example, smells like Zest soap.  His house smells like furniture polish.  My dad smells like Imperial Leather soap and occasionally Old Spice after shave.  Anytime I smell any of the above I think of them.

What do you smell like, JU?  What does your family smell like?

I smell of the soap and lotion I use everyday - Bath And Body Works Amber Myrrh.  It's a combination of myrrh and vanilla with a little ginger and rose thrown in.  It's a wonderful smell, and about the only perfumed stuff I have that doesn't break me out.

My house smells of Pine Sol and sandalwood incense.  Every morning after the kids have gone to school, I gret dressed and light a sandalwood incense stick in front of my kitchen Buddha.  Whilst the stick is burning, I clean - hence the Pine Sol scent.  My living room smells like Yankee Home Candle's 'Fresh Comfort' and 'Clean Cotton' scents, and my bedroom  smells like their 'Storm Watch' scent.

How about you?

*smile*
Kole and I were just speaking of this; we are house-sitting for my parents and we slept in their room last night. As I rested my cheek against the pillow, I was overwhelmed by the scent of my mother's hairspray, lotion, and trailing scent of cigarettes and perfume. It sounds a little much, but is really quite lovely.

My girl could not articulate particular scents, but simply said her pillow smelled like Poppa, and she smiled.

I love Kole's scent: a mixture of Ivory soap, detergent, Colgate toothpaste and strawberries&cream hair conditioner. First thing in the morning, her breath is baaad. But it's strangely comforting, and I miss it when I don't get to see her in the morning.

I know EXACTLY what you mean, and Kole's description is awesome. I can almost smell her from your description....

I really dont know, but Dave's actions were some kind of special!  If I had to ask, I suspect I smell of downy.  Mixed with nasty arm pit stink!

I know I stink!  I just try to control it!

My boys smell like Dragonberry shampoo when clean. They have their own smells that I think maybe only their mommy or daddy appreciate otherwise

I guess I'd have to ask someone else what I smell like to give an accurate account. I probably smell most like my hairspray since I don't wear many scents.

My mom's smell is chanel #5. The smells of cherry tobacco and Old Spice always evoke memories of my grandpa.

I would imagine I smell of cigarettes and beer.

I remember that my Grandpa smelled very faintly of his pipe for years. He also had the scent of wood on his clothes from his carvings. Newspaper and old spice? I thought I knew but I think it was more the combination than anything else.

My grandmother's house smelled of coffee....not very strong, but a scent that had worked it's way into everything and slowly came back to life.

I smell most often of Victoria's Secret Amber Romance, (I love that scent) but my smell changes with the season. Warm cinnimon and vanilla in the winter, florals and citrus in the spring and summer.

HW...smells like Kiwi, boot leather, dust and other "army" scents. But there is another smell.....it's just him.

My dad smelled like Tide laundry soap,  before they changed it,  that and machine shop oil.  When I met my ex-boyfriend,  he being a mechanist too smelled like dad.  Soap and machine oil.

I usually smell like Strawberry shampoo and a Suave floral body wash.  My antiperspirant is almost alway scented like lilacs or lavender.  I know have a new favourite perfum though ******VBS********* it's Celine, thanks dharma

I love any parfums that are a combination of musk and sandalwood,  or floral mixed with a slight citrus to it.

T smells like Pantene hair shampoo and Norsca deodorant and... something indefinable. She has a smell underneath the man-made scents that is all her own. It is kind of spicy but not overwhelming.

Today, I smell a little of the Proofmark timber stain I was using on the weekend as well as a tiny little bit of mineral turpentine I used to clean up after staining a cupboard. I also smell a little of the ironing aid I used to iron my sheets and the Lynx deodorant I'm using at the moment (Voodoo, I think its called).

I'm trying to recall what my parents smell like but I've not seen them in ages, so all I'm recalling is Mum's perfume (for the life of me, the name has completely slipped my mind).

I love to drift off to sleep on T's pillows when she is on night shift. It is like she is there but I have the whole bed to myself.

I used to wonder what was the beautiful exotic scent my wife wore - I've since learned that it's Secret deodorant. She still smells great to me.

My youngest plays outside so much, he always smells like a puppy dog except when he's fresh out of the bathtub.

I smelly fruity. All my of my hair, shampoo, perfume, lotion have fruit scents. Right now I smell of grape (aussie shampoo) and CK1 summer (a little citrusy).

I smell like

Well. I can't finish that sentance since I can't smell anything. All I know, I never had ability to smell my entire life.

This is a great blog, I love things like this. I would like to claim that I smell of the perfume I use, and what a wonderful smell it is. However my two older sisters, who are much older than me (8 and 11 years) always claim I smell of 'baby'. Now I can't really describe this smell to you, but I am sure all you Mums out there no what I'm talking about! I hope they wasn't just been mean and meant dirty nappy and puke! Haha
